A friend of mine believes that the world will end/the world will go corrupt on the year “2012”. He is going to have a huge party the night before “the end”.
“The 2012 Party” he calls it.
Personally, I don’t think anything huge will happen (think Y2K)…but I’m not really sure. Maybe something will…But I am unsure/undecided currently. Some people I know say an asteroid will hit the Earth.
What do you think will happen? Feel free to share any “2012 info/theories” as well.
I thought this might make for an interesting poll. Let’s get voting shall we? ๐
May 4, 2008 at 5:06 pm #169038TigerbladeParticipantWell the Mayans certainly didn’t think anything good would happen.
Meh.
May 4, 2008 at 6:15 pm #169037DavidParticipantHuge discoveries are made every year, so I voted for that. ๐
May 4, 2008 at 8:21 pm #169043PolarBearNPRParticipantI’m with David on this ๐ฎ
Some would say that the world and its occupants are already corrupt; some certainly are – but the VAST majority are most assuredly not. ‘Twill be fun to see just what all happens then – and in the coming years as well. I look forward to the journey.

To be followed by a HUGE global hangover in 2012.
May 5, 2008 at 1:11 am #169042VvWolverinevVParticipantI’d just like to clarify the difference between the world going corrupt and the human race going corrupt… Does the former imply that bears and antelope and crocodiles will start acting without moral recourse? :p I’m a jackass, I know.
But seriously, I was thinking about the Y2K dud before I read MrOats’s post.
Then again, one of the post-docs I work with is convinced that a third world war is coming on the basis of overpopulation alone. Advanced medicine and machinery are impeding the natural balance that AIDS and starvation are striving for. War is inevitable, he says.
I just hope I never have to live through a nuclear fallout. The book Hiroshima, by John Hersey describes terrible suffering after we dropped the second A-bomb.

- The oil crisis will probably worsen. Maybe one of the car manufacturers will be able to come up with a decent and affordable electric car by then.
What an excellent idea for a poll, Andrew. Rep +

I think if Trillian Astra was released today, few would care.
I think by 2012 we will see a lot less dependency on oil. Sustainability and the “Green” movement are really starting to take off in the US (I honestly can’t say I know much about how much is happening in Europe, but I know Canada is near where the US is in terms of being green), and with gas soon to hit $5/gal, I think we’re going to see some great innovation and a huge push to alternative fuel sources, more likely solar than anything else (since cheap, clean electricity really would solve ALL our problems).
On a side, but related note, I think America is about to hit the bottom of the slum before we return to the “better” nation we used to be, and being at the forefront of innovation is integral to this all happening.
May 6, 2008 at 12:41 am #169041MrOatsMemberI am leading to what David and Heather think, something huge will be discovered, probably.

*snicker* Probably that too. ๐

I don’t mind. ๐
Thanks for the rep. Philip! And thanks for replying and voting everyone! I was just interested to see what people think would happen. Alot of people think it’s just rubbish…and some think something huge will happen. Hey, Like Tom said, The Mayans said stuff about it…so…something’s gotta happen! ๐
Anyone else who hasn’t voted/replied to this, feel free to do so! I, and probably others, would like to see your views and ideas as to what you think will happen on the big “2012”. ๐
May 6, 2008 at 2:29 pm #169039TigerbladeParticipantI finally cast my vote in the actual poll, as “nothing will happen.” But I’d like to amend that to “nothing significant will happen” – something will happen, but I highly doubt it’ll be something mindblowingly catastrophic or awesome, and certainly won’t be related to the year itself. Maybe we’ll have some technological or historical or scientific breakthroughs, but it won’t be because it’s 2012.
April 30, 2012 at 2:49 pm #169035Jeff HesterKeymasterI guess we will find out later this year… ๐
May 16, 2012 at 7:34 pm #169040princeGParticipantNothing significant will happen.
