I recently upgraded one of my computers to Windows XP, and needed to run Microsoft NetMeeting to collaborate with a couple guys from work.
Windows 2000 comes with NetMeeting by default (in the Accessories>Communications folder). I looked there in XP, but nothing.
I went to the NetMeeting web site (http://www.microsoft.com/netmeeting), but didn’t find a mention of Windows XP. I tried downloading the version for Win98, but it wouldn’t let me install on XP.
Finally I found out that NetMeeting is included in XP, but isn’t listed in any menus! To add it to your desktop and/or Quick Launch bar, you must run it once. Here’s how:
- Click Start, the Run, and enter Conf
- Click OK
- In the NetMeeting Wizard, supply the necessary information, and then select the Put a shortcut to NetMeeting on my desktop (or on my Quick Launch bar) check box.
If you complete the wizard successfully, NetMeeting will launch and will appear in your Start menu for future sessions.

How dumb is that huh?
And you want us to believe you know what your doing?
Go skiing, build ‘nother house, just stay out of the office.
Please.March 12, 2002 at 5:50 pm #68981rustedtightMemberREPLY 2.
Netmeeting is being phased out cos its not compatible with .net (dot net).
For the new enhanced version of netmeeting ( release candidate 2, netmeeting II 2004, the temp name of ‘dotnetmeetingII’ will be replaced.) wait for the announcements in the press.
C’mon guys, read the signals here.rustedtight.
Tongue firmly embedded in cheek.March 12, 2002 at 8:33 pm #68978Jeff HesterKeymasterI think Microsoft is in fact phasing out NetMeeting. When you consider that all of the functionality of NetMeeting is now built-in to Windows Messenger, it makes sense that they “hid” conf.exe.
Of course, the collaboration features of Windows Messenger are only available when chatting with other Windows Messenger users (MSN Messenger users are out-of-luck!)… and of course, Windows Messenger is only available for Windows XP. So… it all is a plot to drive more and more people towards Windows XP.
At least it’s still there, even if it is hidden. Saved my butt!

BigBlueBall.comSeptember 4, 2002 at 1:49 pm #68983garybeddowMemberI tried running conf and it installed net meeting as you said but the video options were greyed out, I have a web cam installed on my PC is there something I’ve missed. As you said the new ?net stuff is only good if everybody you know is on XP which is never the case when you want a video conference.
Cheers
September 4, 2002 at 2:51 pm #68977Jeff HesterKeymasterIt’s possible that either another program is already using your webcam. Make sure other applications that use the webcam are shut down before running NetMeeting.
It’s also possible (but less likely) that your webcam is not supported by NetMeeting. I say less likely because if the operating system recognizes the webcam and it works in other apps, it should also work in NetMeeting. What kind of cam do you have (brand/model/connection type)?
There are also alternatives. You can use Windows Messenger for text, voice, etc., and use a companion application along with it for video. Logitech has a really nice, FREE, application that works with any webcams. Read our review.

You can try entering conf.exe. If that doesn’t work, search your computer for that file. If you find it (which you should), you can create a shortcut to it that will make it easier to start, or configure the preferences to automatically start it up when you turn your computer on.
