August 9, 2006 at 9:38 pm #149970detn8rParticipantThey don’t flow? Who cares… they are meant for expression. I don’t see how the yellow ones embedded into the software “flow”, just because they are there. And I posted a list of emotes that people could use if they wanted to host them, themselves on something like photobucket.com (as I even said). I didn’t say, I expect anyone to upload them and to be embedded into the forum software.
And you all need to chillax. Honestly, every time someone posts a suggestion about something 95% of everyone is like “I don’t want it”.
Quote:Originally posted by Spike: I really don’t want any more than the basic ones anyway. So, then don’t use them? I think everyone needs to realize that when a suggestion is made, you don’t always have to put yourself first and give a bias about how YOU feel about it. Even if those emotes were there for people in the into forum, and they only posted them once and never came back, what the heck is wrong with that? Start putting other peoples shoes on.. seriously folks.
August 9, 2006 at 10:04 pm #149993MrEggsaladParticipantThanks for the kind words Tea Granny! I’ll be making more as time goes on, so always check back! I also put a link in my sig so it’s easy to find it

my own opinion was simply that i think smilies beyond the most basic emotions are unnecessary. i don’t want to have to sit around and figure out what the little face is supposed to be feeling in order to get the content of the message.
August 9, 2006 at 11:39 pm #150011PolarBearNPRParticipantThat’s my boy! Although this guy is moving a bit s-l-o-w 🙂

August 10, 2006 at 12:04 am #149971detn8rParticipantTigerblade, most emotes are basic as it is. And no one uses them excessively enough to slow a page load. And if they did, it would be only probable in the intro forum.
And giving opinions is fine. It’s the opinions some people make for the whole group, or making a decision based on what those who post say. I mean, what if people are mia for a week, then come back and find out they missed out on discussion and a suggestion was being made and a decision was made that could impact how they post on the forums?
And for the record, there are TONS of emotes that express A LOT of emoticons that the current emotes do not express. Two are even listed in the thread title. But, just because someone can TYPE *yawn* doesn’t mean it wouldn’t lighten up a discussion if there was an emote instead.
Hosting emotes that DO serve purposes (such as: ) DO deserve to be hosted by BBB’s services. These could be used for countless reasons, and don’t even have to be listed on the list when posting. They could be considered “hidden easter egg emotes” or something (useable for those who want them). But then again, I mean, if you don’t want to use them, don’t. It’s just that simple……
August 10, 2006 at 12:08 am #149995MrEggsaladParticipantWell the problem with some of those emotions you had, I mean what would users have to type to get them? And you would have to make it so it wouldn’t be like them accidentally getting it all the time. What would a wave, praize, or “no” look like in text form?
August 10, 2006 at 1:45 am #149983SpikeMemberI’m going to just tell you flat out right now (and, yes, this is my biased opinion, so what) I think the smilies you suggested are fugly. They do NOT flow with the rest of the smilies. They’re ugly! They are horribly designed, they have jagged edges, and the just don’t “flow” with the rest of the text, site, or current smilies. It’s hard to describe. And I’d rather not add tons and tons of new smilies, even if they are easter eggs, because I honestly hate reading posts with tons and tons if smilies. I’ve memorized the BBB emotes enough where I can glance at them and understand what they represent. Adding new ones, I’d have to stop and look at the emote, and think about it. You know what, it’s just hard to explain, and I am really against this. Note my attempt at reasoning/explaing why, because that’s all you’re going to get.
I also realize that I can’t stop you from linking to sites like Imageshack, but there isn’t much I can do about that. On the other hand, (I would hope) my voice does count for BBB-related matters, which is why I’m expressing my opinion.
On a lighter note, if you were to find new smileys that matched our current ones and didn’t look horrid, I might change my thoughts about adding them, depending on their looks and how many there are.
August 10, 2006 at 2:07 am #149972detn8rParticipantI respect your opinion and I agree — they are ugly. But that link was only the FIRST hit I got when I did a google search, man. I didn’t mean take this list of emotes and EAT IT!
As for common emotes, like the praise, and wave.. they are very common on other forums, and I don’t see why it would make you drop what you are doing and make you think what the heck it means. I mean, facial expressions are one thing, but OTHERS are obviously easy to recognize. But like I said, people don’t commonly always use them, and even visiting other forums, only use them when they are needed. I mean, its not like we will have a page full of animated emotes going. But I will admit THAT is annoying!
Anyways, mainly what I was going to suggest was, IF people were going to use emotes LIKE the ones I posted in that link, WHY NOT host them here instead of on a third-party site that COULD lag your net, while them being on the BBB server, they would just load normally with the rest of the graphics that are hosted on the BBB server.
But, whatever I’ll end my case tho. I’ve said my piece.
August 10, 2006 at 12:55 pm #150012PolarBearNPRParticipantUmm, hate to agree with det here, but as I was welcoming a new person today and excited about the coffee cup that *my son* made (I’m still so proud!) It just lagged. 🙁 So I used another welcome one that was visible in Eggy’s Smiler box and it did appear. So, I think as someone else mentioned, maybe just stick with what we have here (they’re good enough), use actual words to communicate, and enjoy the various offerings of folks, knowing that there may be lag times, but the message will still appear.
In other words – don’t count on emotes to communicate. We have a whole keyboard full of letters to spell out exactly what we’re trying to get across. :woot: But I do love the woot

I added it to “my favorites” yesterday!

Stupid ImageShack, see that’s the only problem with this. I’ll try to re-upload them when I get a chance too and hope it all works then.Bah, they are just from my server for now. I doubt it will do any real harm to my bandwidth, so yeah. All work now.
August 11, 2006 at 4:24 am #149968Jeff HesterKeymasterHey, I’m cool with adding a few new smilies. Got some good ones?
As for stealing bandwidth, it’s only stealing if it’s done without permission. If you have permission to link, feel free. The one thing I don’t like about it is that I have no control over what server you link to. If you link to a graphic on a slow server, it can slow down the page load time. At least if it’s on the BBB server, I can only blame myself! :p
As an aside, there is a neat little utility that lets you drag-and-drop smilies and other graphics into forums. Yep, it actually inserts proper BBcode!
It’s called SmileyPad and it’s freeware. Enjoy!
August 11, 2006 at 9:18 am #149987sarahtownyMemberlol I want to know why in BBB you would ever want to use a bored smiley! haha
