The BBC is airing a special program that plans to challenge scientific theory about simple steps to improve your intelligence in just seven days. Here’s a link to the complete story, and here’s your assignment (below).
THE GET SMARTER GUIDE
Saturday
Brush your teeth with your ‘wrong’ hand and take a shower with your eyes closed.
Sunday
Do the crossword or Sudoku puzzle in your Sunday paper and take a brisk walk.
Monday
Have oily fish for dinner, and either cycle, walk or take the bus into work.
Tuesday
Select unfamiliar words from the dictionary and work them into conversations.
Wednesday
Go to yoga, Pilates or a meditation class, and talk to someone you don’t know.
Thursday
Take a different route to work; watch Countdown or Brainteaser.
Friday
Avoid caffeine or alcohol; memorise your shopping list.Just for kicks, I’m going to play along in the home version and report the results on my blog. Any other takers?
March 8, 2006 at 3:52 am #139660OreoMemberI’ll do what I can…but I cannot watch “Countdown” or “Brainteaser” as they don’t air here! =P And busses don’t run where I work…I’m lucky I can get my car down the drive without getting stuck or sliding off! LOL
March 8, 2006 at 9:49 am #139663QwertyMemberCool. I can do that. I guess I can watch any quiz show to replace Countdown or Brainteaser?
March 8, 2006 at 1:16 pm #139665sarahtownyMemberOh this looks a giggle. A few would be difficult ie find another route to work as there is only one road out of my village!
Sunday I do the crossword, don’t like Sudoku, but my son loves it, so that could lead to me getting a telling off if I tried to go anywhere near it!
If you don’t get Countdown, (I have not heard of Brainteaser must be something on during the day when I am at work), but Countdown is basically like scrabble, I think it’s 7 letters they are given and whoever makes the longest word with the letters given, wins the round.
Good luck!
March 10, 2006 at 7:51 pm #139661Dr KimbleParticipantThis sounds very interesting! Very interesting indeed. Starting tomorrow (Saturday) I am definately going to give this a go. I don’t quite have a blog, so I’ll just either post here, or find someplace to report how it goes 😀
March 11, 2006 at 4:41 pm #139664KudoParticipantInteresting indeed.
This has been discussed before in my class and there is so much more than just this.
Believing You Can Get Smarter Makes You Smarter, anyway many people believe that intelligence is fixed and many psychological studies suggests is true.March 22, 2006 at 6:05 am #139659Jeff HesterKeymasterAnyone try this? I got through day one, then forgot!
Maybe there’s another exercise to improve memory… *grumble*March 22, 2006 at 11:20 am #139666MrEggsaladParticipantHeh…I didn’t see this until just now. However, I think I shall try. But since I take a bus…the going to work thing won’t really work out. I’ll try my best to do these things.

Maybe there’s another exercise to improve memory… *grumble*I did, but I had trouble with the ‘Yoga/pilates/meditation lesson’ exercise, so I kind of…erm, didn’t do everything. 😮
I think I’ll try again, but this time I will take an IQ test before and after to see if anything actually happens 😉
Feeling smarter and testing smarter are very different.
