Now I know it’s a grey area, and that it wasn’t originally supposed to be used for Windows, but just for my curiosity, has anybody around here ever used Aim Sniff for any rhyme or reason? I’d heard about it some time ago and was tempted to check it out, but I didn’t feel like doing all that work just to get it to work with Windows. I’m lazy like that.
August 31, 2004 at 3:59 am #73164_Max_Memberwhat exactly does it do?
August 31, 2004 at 4:16 am #73165bigcfkMemberit looks like a logger. get middle_man instead.
August 31, 2004 at 6:13 am #73161RabidKittenParticipantIt’s heh…not a logger, kid.
I don’t know all the technical mumbo jumbo, so someone jump in if you know better, but the way I understand it is that AIM itself isn’t a secured channel and anyone can tap in and read anyone elses IMs. Well, that is what AIM sniff does…it lets you peek into anyone elses IMs at any time and see what they’re saying.

About AIM Sniff
AIM Sniff is a utility for monitoring and archiving AOL Instant Messenger messages across a network. You can either do a live dump (actively sniff the network) or read a PCAP file and parse the file for IM messages. You also have the option of dumping the information to a MySQL database, a flat file, STDOUT, or any combination of the three. AIM Sniff allows administrators to see how often users are chatting to monitor for abuse and you can also use AIM Sniff to monitor for cases of harassment or pirated software trading. It has been tested on FreeBSD, Linux, and OS X.I’ve tried it myself (on linux) although someone has done a windows port. Basically he made it using a packet sniffer called ethereal. He sent messages to friends, caught the packets, and used this to reverse engineer the toc protocol himself. As I said I don’t know about the windows program, but I just ran the prog from the command prompt, and blamo…. “there’s nothing like the smell of fresh IMs in the morning”

Then what use it to most people? Aim4.8+ Use OSCAR, TOC isn’t used much at all anymore. (Even though you can still use it)
