As any fellow nerd/computer guy knows, music is a vital part of the internet experience. A tune playing while chatting can create an enviroment ripe for learning. So the obvious question becomes “What is the best music to chat/hack/program to? For me, Techno/Trance etc. is the obvious choice, what with the hypnotic beats and ethereal soundscaping. What is your favorite? Let me know.

It really does depend on what I’m doing. Coding, anything fast paced and will keep me stimulated while I go through the mind numbing lists of code, something like System and Greenday with a bit of Aerosmith and Opera to keep me on my toes, something I can “sing” along with. Also been known to put the entire song track to Disney’s Mulan and Footloose on there with a few fun Buffy Songs…
Photoshoppin’, something a little calmer, but still enough to keep me muttering along.
And the chat thing…it depends on the kind of rp Im going into. I had a war scene a while ago and my brother was thinking that the house was being taken over by evil 80s rock stars. It was awesome to say the least. What can I say…I love my jukebox.
I can’t say I’ve listened to much techno or trance…I don’t know anyone who listens to it…so…no good suggestions. You don’t want your first experience with a music genre to be a crap one, so you have to ask someone in the know for suggestions.

personally I like crystal method or fluke for techno (of course I have a lot more than that, but those are my top picks)… otherwise some punk/rock like Gob, Linkin Park, or the Strokes…. depends on what i’m looking for or what i’m doing
December 14, 2004 at 6:51 am #108738RuseOfMetacarpiMemberIt can be staggering the amount of music available to the casual listener. But as you said, it sometimes depends on the situation or what I am doing at the present, sometimes its whatever song pops up in my playlist. Another thing that happens is I become so engrossed in whatever it is I am doing that a song will come and go and I will snap out and go “wait….what song was that?” after the song ends.
The world of Underground Trance/Techno is one of extreme opinions, so I will give just that, My opinion.
I would say, Paul Van Dyke, Dj Tiesto, Dj Skribble, Dj Sammi and Brooklyn Bounce is a good place to start, they should give you a well-rounded idea of what to expect from trance/techno. Sometimes its hard to decipher the difference between certain types of underground music and I wouldn’t want the freakish fans of a certain genre pinning me up for (heaven forbid) labeling Lords of Acid as “Techno” when it is actually “House”. So step lightly and if you don’t like it, move on. And PS: Greenday ROCKS!Ruse Of Metacarpi

Part of trying to be a well rounded person, inflict all kinds of damage musically to yourself, as it sometimes turns out, heh. And by the way, welcome to BigBlueBall…I like your avatar *snickers*
And yes…Greenday does rock…especially for being a bunch of old fogeys, heh.December 14, 2004 at 7:00 am #108739RuseOfMetacarpiMember*groans* is it just me, or does my avatar suddenly look like a rabid kitten? *sighs* I think I will have to fix that. And thanks for the welcome, what an interesting band of coded people you are 😉

As for intersting…you haven’t seen anything yet *evil, plotting grin*December 14, 2004 at 7:13 am #108740RuseOfMetacarpiMember*raises eyebrow* uh…..huh *backing closer to the door*:p I used to read all the little subjects at The Big Blue Ball, looking from the outside. Was always too lazy to become involved in this strange little community, ripe with avatars and text running out my 😮 .. It’s nice!!
December 14, 2004 at 11:12 pm #108737SpikeMemberHmm, if I really want to get my mind going and concentrate on programming, I’ll listen to Linkin Park. Bu if I’m just surfing, it’s usually Classic Rock ‘n’ Roll, no specific band, just good, popular oldies. 😎
January 1, 2005 at 12:45 pm #108736UnSaKreDMemberGenerally speaking, when I am programming I like to listen to Underworld/Chemical Brothers. But surfing in General, it could be anything from 311 to Jurassic 5
