We have done some experiments in using the market available Skype USB phones with Google Talk. See the results at:
http://amperordirect.wordpress.com
Our finding is: most USB phone vendors are still in early software development stage. The USB phones can usually work as a speaker / microphone combination. However, the buttons on those phones won’t work right. The only USB phone we found to fully support Google Talk is Yealink P1K. See the product page at:

Happy reading.
Great article! Thanks for the information.
I’m not surprised by the results. Most of these products are designed specifically for Skype, although there are now some also available for Windows Live Messenger. You would think that some clever manufacturer would devise an easy way to interface with your VoIP program of choice — Skype, Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger, Gizmo or whatever.
