With the release of Gizmo 3.0, they have added a few more VoIP networks you can call for free! That’s Google Talk, and now adding on Windows Live Messenger and Yahoo Messenger. So now, with just Gizmo you can talk to pretty much any of your friends.
Along with that, they have added these major features as well:
- Group Chat – Communicate as a group in real-time.
- File Sharing – Instantly share files on your computer with family and friends.
- Custom Avatars – Customize your Gizmo profile with a personal photo.
- Tabbed Chat Interface – Organize all your live chats within one window.
- Chat Logging – Record and save chat sessions you can read again later.
In order to call a friend on Yahoo or WLM, type the ID or username of the person you want to call, plus the network domain. For example, [email protected] or [email protected]
March 3, 2007 at 10:03 pm #158900Jeff HesterKeymasterI’ve run Gizmo in the past, mainly as an alternative to Skype. One thing I really like about it is that it has built-in audio recording capability — perfect for recording podcasts.
BUT… hardly anyone used Gizmo, so Skype was the VoIP of choice. This new interoperability with WLM and Yahoo may prove to be the tipping point for Gizmo.
I’m (re)installing now…
March 3, 2007 at 11:18 pm #158901Jeff HesterKeymasterI downloaded and installed, but I’m having trouble signing in. It’s not blocked by my firewall (OneCare). I keep getting an “disconnected” message. Anyone get it working ok?
March 6, 2007 at 10:20 pm #158903FanaticMemberI wish I could confirm your problem, Jeff, but it won’t install at all on Windows Vista. What?! No Vista support?!
March 9, 2007 at 5:25 am #158902Jeff HesterKeymasterI finally got the new version connected on XP (what a shame about the lack of support for Vista!). I had to restart the PC, although the install did not instruct me to do so.

Gizmo – A free phone for your computer – ForumMy problem is calling hotmail accounts. I tried to set up a hotmail friend, but couldn’t find any instructions, so I winged it. I still could not get Gizmo to display an “online” indicator after I got the friend set up. I am probably doing something wrong. I just haven’t figured it out yet. I really like the Gizmo look and feel though, and the test sound came over really nice.
