Today I added a new feature that makes the BigBlueBall forums accessible on your mobile phone, PDA, smartphone, Blackberry or even an iPhone. Point your mobile browser to https://bigblueball.com/forums/ and we will now automatically detect if you are browsing on a mobile device and give you a specially formatted version of the forums I call BigBlueBall Mobile.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a full range of devices to test this on, so I need your help. If you’ve got a mobile device capable of browsing the web, please give it a try. Post a reply here with the make and model of your mobile phone or PDA, whether it worked (or not), and any feedback you can offer. You’ll get extra points for screenshots!
Bear in mind that this is a very early beta. It should work just fine, but it won’t be very pretty.
Hope you’ll find BigBlueBall Mobile a good way to stay in touch even when you’re not near your computer.
February 20, 2008 at 5:58 pm #167391sarahtownyMemberI thought I would give it a test on my phone Nokia N70 and I just got an error message, worth a shot though!
February 20, 2008 at 6:00 pm #167375Jeff HesterKeymasterSarah, thanks for testing. What is the error message you get? Can you take photo of the screen using another camera and upload that?
February 20, 2008 at 6:08 pm #167384FanaticMemberI tested it on my iPhone, and I think it works. It looks different, but with ugly colors and really small text. It’s not really iPhone friendly.
I’ve included a screenshot. What do I get? 🙂

February 20, 2008 at 6:15 pm #167385GandalfMemberDoesn’t appear to work on my iPAQ hw6515a. Looks like the normal forum, which doesn’t fit well on the tiny iPAQ screen and is really a pain to read.
I would love to see a mobile version of the forum. Right now, it loads to slowly to use on my mobile, but if it were quick, functional and easy, I could be on here all the time.
Now if only the arcade worked on my mobile. 😉

February 20, 2008 at 6:19 pm #167392sarahtownyMemberlol I just checked it was nothing to do with you, its a new phone and apparently I need to prove I am over 18, that’s a first. Will sort it with my provider tomorrow and test again ;0)

Doris, thanks for the feedback. The mobile version wasn’t displaying then, because there are NO graphics included in the mobile version. It should look similar to the screenshot that Fanatic posted above.
It appears that I need to do add recognition for some additional browser agents (a string that helps the webserver identify exactly what web browser you’re using).
Thanks to everyone for helping in round one of our testing!
February 21, 2008 at 1:46 am #167386detn8rParticipantI’m using a Blackberry Pearl 8130, and the site loads as it before, with no change. It loads graphics (like the bigbluenetwork) and just stacks the categories.
February 23, 2008 at 1:17 am #167377Jeff HesterKeymasterOk, I’ve narrowed down the problem to a conflict with our “default” theme in the BigBlueBall forums. It does work in the news forums, however (at least, it did in my testing).
Please try again going here:
February 23, 2008 at 3:07 am #167396YahooliganMemberAt your service!
I tested the news forums on my wireless PDA and they WORKED! I’ve attached some screenshots I took using Remote Display for Windows CE powertoy.
I hope you get it working for the regular forums soon. The mobile skin is MUCH faster!

February 23, 2008 at 6:48 pm #167378Jeff HesterKeymasterThanks, Yahooligan! *reps up* I’m still digging for an answer on why the detection isn’t working with our standard forum skin. Hopefully soon!
February 23, 2008 at 7:26 pm #167387detn8rParticipantJeff the new system kicksass, a lot easier to read and navigate! Hopefully you can get this working on all the forums.
Posted from blackberry.

February 25, 2008 at 6:21 pm #167393StigmataMemberUsing Nokia n95 and the built in web browser, just shows the normal forum page.
Also tried on opera mini (same phone), and still no mobile version
🙁
