I am so happy to hear that you and your father are OK. So many of the police officers, from what I’ve heard, are worked to the bone, and others have just left their posts. You have every right to be annoyed at the media… Anything for a story. When all of this is over and the dust settles, the truth will come out, but you are so right that the important thing now is getting people safe and back on their feet. I look forward to the day when you are back here with your devilish wit! 🙂

Yet another tropical storm (Rita) which will soon be a hurricane is headed toward our direction here in south florida. I do not think it will be a direct hit but we will still feel the strong side of it. The bad thing is that it will likely cross the gulf, and strengthen, and according to meteorologists hit texas or lousiana. 🙁

Here is a first hand encounter with Katrina from my cousin and I want it to show the importance of evacuating: *Note* Sarah is her 4-5yr old daughter, Bernard (husband)
We didn`t evacuate, BIG MISTAKE. The water came up so fast. We didn`t even have time for shoes, we barely got dressed. We were going to go to my Dad`s sunday but when we started getting ready the tv said don`t go to Baton Rouge the only other place we had to go was Mississippi and that was worse than going to Baton Rouge. We had only minutes we had no id, no money , no credit cards, Nothing. The front door blew in due to the water so we floated Sara on it under the back part of the double until the water rose enough for us to get on the roof. We stayed on the roof for like 3 hours, then Bernard poked a hole in the roof for us to get into the attic, we stayed there until the water started to rise in the attic. We climbed back out to the roof with plans to go across the street because there was a 2 story over there. There were men in it and a capsized boat we tried to get them to come over but they couldn`t the boat turned over. We found a board that was floating and figured we could use that to float over, we had the bird cage and Sara on it and 2 of the cats,( We never saw Prego come out the house), Well when we pushed off the board sank the cage went under and killed the birds. One cat got in the tree and one got to a roof next door. Bernard and Sara went under and I freaked but he said a power line was there that he believed an angel sent to him. I got them to the tree and they hugged it for 2 hours while I tried to get help. We thought that the wind would die down enough but after 2 hours they were both getting week. I was holding onto a tire that floated by and the Magnolia tree across the street. I pulled myself against the current and floated into the tree they were in with the tire. I took Sara first and the men in the 2 story took her from me and I went back for Bernard. They were both weak and blue. The men had a mattress floating that was dry on top, they covered both of them to get them warm with some dry blankets they found. That evening the sheriff`s office took Sara and Bernard to the court house. The other 3 men and I spent the night in the 2 story, at one time the water was up to their chest before we got there! The next morning the fire department took us to the sugar refinery. I didn`t see Bernard and Sara until weds. afternoon at the St Bernard Port. Thursday we were shipped by barge to Gretna then taken to I-10 we stayed there until saturday morning where we pushed and fought to get on a bus bound for Houstan Convention Center where for the first time in a week we had a shower and was able to throw away the shoes people gave us along the way. They checked us out , got us clothes, toiletries and tons on toys for Sara. We had a hot meal no more MRE`s 🙂 Sunday I finally got my Uncle in Mississippi ( I could not remember ANY numbers and called info for him) Not 3 hours later my cousin had showed up and said my Dad was on the way. Never again will I take anything for granted. I am so proud of Sara, at first she freaked and begged me not to let her die. I told her to do everything we said and I promised I would never ever let that happen. I am still waiting for a decent booby holder 🙂 I have ordered from Lane Bryant and Roaman`s I am just waiting for them to come in. I did get to the store Lane Bryant so I look ok going to church 🙂 I cannot wait to in my own type of clothes. We are staying with my Dad who now has 13 people living in his house (3 bedrooms, 2 baths) Bernard was able to get on at a Winn-Dixie up here and we were able to get a car, so now it is just a matter of a place to live. We are NOT moving back down there. We have had enough of Da Parish of course it will never be the same again. Nicole it is destroyed they are going to have to be bulldozed.
September 20, 2005 at 3:46 pm #128838OreoMemberI almost did not post….I do not really have words to describe the feelings that reading that gave me. Seeing all of her life change in a matter of moments…and all the people and places change as well. She sounds like SUCH a strong person…getting back together and starting all over again… no wonder her daughter is strong…she takes after her parents. I am just so glad you all made it to safety, I also hope her kitties were some of those that were rescued by people…there is a website for recovered animals.
