I buy music now, and yes, I have also shared music with friends. And you don’t need to pay $20 for a CD… you can get complete CDs at iTunes.com for $10, or just the songs you want for a buck apiece.
Music sharing is a great way to explore new music that you’re not familiar with, but when you know what you want, purchasing makes sense.
I’m more likely to purchase online vs. buying a CD in a store, although I sometimes do that, too.
March 29, 2005 at 7:21 pm #115763Jeff HesterKeymasterI often use file sharing programs to get music but the thing is I sometimes use it as a way to see if I would like a cd and if I like it enough I go out and buy it. For some reason I just like having the real thing, not to mention most people don’t post music at their highest quality. Most of my music I’ve gotten from my friends who just give each other cd’s with music that we have. The real life file sharing way.

You can legally rip a track you own to your computer then sell it and not get in trouble because you originally had purchased the cd. The flaw is that they dont mention if you still have the cd or not.

thats a great service for college students, $2.99 for spiderman 2 and unlimited downloading service for only $5 a month compared to the $19.99 regular downloading sites have.

I’m confused about what this is? A file-sharing service you pay for?April 8, 2005 at 7:52 am #115777TigerbladeParticipantyeah basically. colleges would sign up for a legal filesharing service, which students can subscribe to for some monthly fee. whether its unlimited downloading, or capped, or whatever… and i’m not sure about the variety of material available, like there’s some songs that are kinda rare or not mainstream that might not be available.
but yes, a monthly subscription to file sharing.

April 27, 2005 at 1:52 am #115789colinMemberI did not buy software and music before P2P, and I will not buy it if P2P suddenly stops. Most of the things I download I could do without, it is just there for convienance.
May 17, 2005 at 10:16 pm #115795JahobaMemberNo, I will never buy music or movies. It’s way too much considering how little I make.
May 17, 2005 at 10:20 pm #115778TigerbladeParticipantnever? never ever? the way i see it, i buy things if i really like them and want to support the makers. i too have quite the limited budget, being a college student and all, but every once in a while i’ll put aside some cash for something i want to buy.
dont tell me you never ever go out to eat or go to see a movie in the theatre? how is that any different? do without one or two dinners at a restaurant and there’s the spare cash for some music or movie that you want to buy. granted i don’t go out and buy every new album that comes out, i dont go and get every new release movie on the day it comes out. i do try to get the ones i really like, though. i plan to eventually buy legitimate copies of all the movies i have (like the great trilogies – Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, etc…)
May 18, 2005 at 11:43 am #115783QwertyMemberI listen to a lot of music by artists who arnt together anymore or making music. I probably buy a CD every 3 months or so but never spever spend more than $20 (a new release being about $25-$30)
AS cheap as legally and ilegally downloading music is, i like to own the actual CD of bans I like.
I got a rage against the machine for $15 the other week ,for example, when i already have all the songs on it my computer that I have downloaded. I just like to have the CD,
The most I ever spent on a Cd was $25 for AC/DC Live.
That said, a lot of stuff from one hit wonders that I listen to and whose albums only have about 2 good songs each (INXS for example), I would never buy their CD’s. So i download it, and i dont know what i would do if all free p2p was shut down.
May 18, 2005 at 4:53 pm #115779TigerbladeParticipantspeaking of one hit wonders and the like…. some of the bands i like are almost unheard of, so good luck finding a CD in the store. some bands are local bands or just getting started, so file sharing is the only way to get their songs. i have one album by a band that i couldnt find ANY information on google about, couldnt find anything about them anywhere.
May 19, 2005 at 11:06 am #115780RabidKittenParticipantAs long as folks have a soft spot for one hit wonders, golden oldies and unknown bands and musicians, it’s going to be hard to cut out music downloading and file sharing. That and there’s always just those cheep bastards *shrug*
Okay, personally, I love going to the theater, and watching something at home, especially on the computer, just doesn’t compare, especially when you live with a bunch of people who constantly interrupt whatever you’re doing because they have some strange concept that everything they do is worth the interruption *sigh* I mean, really…there is no comparison between watching Resident Evil at home and watching Resident Evil on the big screen.
Secondly, if they were shut down…all the filesharing and all that…I’d just coorce friends to send me music, let me borrow cds to rip onto my computer…things like that. I can’t count how many times I’ve had friends come over and bring all their music on one disk and pop it all into my computer. Sure…that means that now I have nearly 3 versions of every Sarah McLauklan song and a bunch of random jesus tunes, but hey, I can deal with that *shrug*
Edit: Not to say that I don’t have a lot of legal CDs…I do, but really, music isn’t that gigantic a thing on my list of things in life that I’d need to go out of my way to buy up every CD that had one song I liked on it. Music isn’t a neccesity for me, its nice, but really, I’d rather eat a meal for once, thanks.
May 19, 2005 at 3:58 pm #115771EEDOKMemberIf there’s one thing that P2P should be stopping it’s illegal distribution of video games. People can’t lipsync a top 40 game, and survive on image alone, then end up in a mansion. Most game developers don’t even make a million dollars and they put far more work into games than a musician will put into a song. A good song lasts about 4 minutes, a game is horendous if it only lasts 4 minutes(and most have more than 4 minutes of music in them).
