Jeff Hester
September 11, 2001
During the terrorist attacks in New
York and Washington DC, phone lines and news web sites were jammed and
unavailable. People at work used instant messaging and chat to connect with
friends and loved ones and get updates on what happened.
With
phone lines unavailable, people at home listened to radio and television reports
and relayed the news to whole groups of people in offices that were otherwise
unable to get news.
Instant messaging is allowing people to check
on the latest news, find out about loved ones and share their feelings and
support each other.
