I have a couple of ideas, but before I give information you may not be able to use & might be even more frustrating – I was hoping you could clarify why you think the password is still there, so I can best determine how to help you get to your account (if it’s even possible.)

In addition, here’s what Microsoft says about the two methods of resetting a password when you’ve forgotten it:
Reset your password
If you forget your password, you must reset it before you can sign in to Windows Live again. You can reset your password by sending yourself a password reset e-mail message or by providing location information and answering your secret question. To reset your password by requesting a password reset e-mail:
- On any Windows Live website or service sign-in page, click Forgot your password.
- Enter your Windows Live ID, type the characters you see in the Picture box, and then click Continue.
- Select Send password reset instructions to me in e-mail.
- In the list, select the e-mail address where you want the password reset e-mail to be sent, and then click Continue.
- On the confirmation page, click OK.
- When you receive the password reset e-mail, click the link in the e-mail to reset your password, and then follow the online instructions.
To reset your password by providing location information and the answer to your secret question:
- On any Windows Live website or service sign-in page, click Forgot your password.
- Enter your Windows Live ID, type the characters you see in the Picture box, and then click Continue.
- Click Use my location information and secret answer to verify my identity.
- In the Country/Region list, select the name of your country or region , select your state, and then type your ZIP code ( The postal code system that is used in the United States. The ZIP code consists of a series of digits that are added to a postal address. The ZIP code is used to identify each postal delivery area for the purpose of sorting mail.) or postal code ( A series of letters and/or digits that are added to a postal address and used by the postal service for the purpose of sorting mail.) if you’re prompted to do so. In the Question area in the Secret Answer box, type your answer to the question.
- Click Continue.
- Enter and confirm a new password, and then click Continue.
- If prompted, enter an alternate e-mail address (An alternate e-mail address is a secondary e-mail address registered with your Windows Live credentials. In the event that you forget your password, you can request to have the password reset information sent to your alternate e-mail address) and click Continue or click Skip to bypass this step.
- On the You’ve changed your password page, click Sign in to Windows Live.
Tip
To set your password to expire every 72 days, click the Make my password expire every 72 days check box.Notes
The Password strength meter will help you determine whether your password is considered a strong password. If you’re using a Windows Live ID for your alternate e-mail address and you’ve selected Remember me on this computer and Remember my password on the login screen, you’ll be able to log into your e-mail and retrieve your password.
If you’re using a Windows Live ID for your alternate e-mail address and you’re using an e-mail program that allows you to save your Windows Live ID and password, such as Outlook, you’ll be able to log into your e-mail and retrieve your password.
Multiple attempts at signing in with the incorrect password might cause your account to become blocked. If your account becomes blocked, you will be asked to Match the characters in the picture and sign in again.
Some services require you to change your password every 72 days. If you use one of these services, automatic password expiration may be set already and can’t be changed.

December 14, 2007 at 6:14 am #163760PhilipModeratorHi, have you tried following Jeff’s instructions (see To reset your password by requesting a password reset e-mail:)
December 28, 2007 at 11:04 pm #163764PrintyoneMemberI think what these guys are trying to ask is Why can’t they see the button that allows them to enter the location info
I have been trying for days to access my hotmail account and that option does not appear anywhere despite following the instructions….. so why can’t we see this reset option.
The only option that appears available to us is the “send it to my email” which obviously is useless if you cannot access your email account.
Can someone offer some help accessing this option

June 16, 2008 at 3:37 pm #163765seeksoftwareMember🙂 after I have forgotten it along with secret answer. Contacted MSN support but no answer for couple of months. The only last thing was this program (msn password recovery) that I downloaded from Top Password Software, Inc [top-password.com]. I could of course create a new account, but then I would lose all contact lists and some very important emails in my Hotmail inbox.

June 7, 2009 at 4:03 pm #163767RichardWilliamsMemberIf you think you have stored any related email on your computer, you may be able to try the following.
– Download biterscripting from http://www.biterscripting.com . It’s free. And, based on my experience, it installs in minutes.
– Start biterscripting. Install their sample scripts with the following command
Code:– One of the sample scripts the above installs, is called SS_FindEmailStrs. (SS for Sample Script) It searches email files for one or more strings and lists entire emails in which it finds those search strings. (Depending the size and number of emails, it may take a while.) Call this email search script with the following command.
Code:script “SS_FindEmailStrs.txt” storagedir(“storage folder”) files(“*.eml”) search_strings(“hotmail+password”) sep(“;”) lines(100)The above will list contents of all emails that contain the search phrases hotmail AND passowrd within the first 100 lines. The storagedir() argument is the path to email storage folder. Find that out from the Tools menu of your email client. Search phrases can contain spaces, etc. Search phrases are separated by +. A single search phrase is allowed. The search is case insensitive ….. Heck, this is a lot of typing – just use the following command to get the entire scoop on this script.
Code:help SS_FindEmailStrsRichard
