Update from Neowin:
Quote:quote:As MSN Messenger 7 goes into private beta, Neowin has learned of several exploits resulting in the “winks” feature of MSN Messenger 7. A Neowin member wishing to remain anonymous has alerted us that users can generate their own flash movies and send them across MSN Messenger. As flash movies can open other things on the system such as Internet Explorer, this could be fatal. As MSN Messenger 7 is only beta and isn’t available publically this isn’t a major exploit but it does show that added features to a product like this makes it less secure and more open to attack/exploit.MSN Messenger 7 is beta and is available in copies floating around the internet. We strongly advise members not to use the current beta until this flaw has been resolved. MSN Messenger 7 effectively opens your system up to allow a hacker to run numerous tasks on your machine.
We ask members not to post any exploit code or how to exploit MSN Messenger 7, thank you.

It’s pretty simple if you ask me. Don’t accept IM’s from people that are not on your contact list, and turn this feature off totally via Options to protect yourself from any possible intelligent contacts you may have.
An anonymous member? I have no doubt it was Microsoft themselves 😉October 5, 2004 at 4:50 am #71091IceMemberok heres another question, let’s see if detn8r can get this one.
when you click the lil button on the top of the buddy list to remove the windows outter frame and then try to place it at the top of your screen it wont go to the top it automatically sends it down about a half inch. how would one go about reshacking or setting it to sit at the very top?
October 5, 2004 at 5:21 pm #71075detn8rParticipantIt seems to do the same thing to me as well. I’m not sure if this is a bug, or a possible feature, but it seems to leave room for the window frame. Fix? Meh… is it really worth looking into?
October 5, 2004 at 7:46 pm #71092IceMemberwell I’m one of those wicked fussy ppl that likes to have everything on his desktop exactly where it should be. so I like the look of it with the outer window removed but would like it at the top of the screen. call me nuts but Im just a fussy pc owner.
October 6, 2004 at 1:56 pm #71097Mr_VMemberDetn8r, thumbs up for that registry hack for killing tabs!!! 😀
And if you can solve the following, I might just form a religion based on you.
1) Any way of removing the huge hideous SEARCH button/text box below the Contacts lise?
2) There is so much wasted space above the Contacts lise where your nick and personal photo is shown. Can you “minimize” somehow all this space around the nickname and “Email” and “MSN Today” (bloody annoying) buttons?
3) Please, please, can anyone remove the advert banner?
Cheers

Oh but yes, yes, and YES!!!
The following patch will remove (all each optional):
– MSN Today button
– Search bar
– Advertisement
– Actions pane (eg. “add contact”)
– (BETA) tagDownload here.
To get back your customs (display pictures, backgrouns etc) try the following:
1) Close MSN Messenger.
2) Open C:Documents and Settings%username%Application DataMicrosoftMSN Messenger in Explorer.
3) Copy (CTRL+C) all the directory`s consisting out of a number.
4) Open C:Documents and Settings%username%Application DataMicrosoftMSN Messenger (BETA) in Explorer.
5) Hit Paste (CTRL+V) and choose to overwrite things when asked.
And of course, get custom games for 7.0 from http://games.mess.be/
And last but not lest, get polygamy for 7.0 here.
All thanks to the wounderful programmers for mess.be

MSN Messenger 7 Beta News – no winks, no sign-in
Posted by Tom Warren on 06 Oct 2004 – 19:03 CET | 23 CommentsFollowing on from our security alert this week MSN have not only delayed the release of an external beta but they’re planning to remove crucial new features temporarily. According to sources close to MSN, MSN Messenger 7 beta will ship without ‘winks’ and deluxe display pictures. Currently it’s easy for hackers to exploit the code of winks to display any flash movies on a users computer for any amount of time.
MSN took the decision following the public announcements of the exploits. We’re unsure whether ‘winks’ are going to be axed from MSN Messenger 7 or whether MSN are merely revamping them to be included in later betas.
In other news, The Messenger team will be implementing a CVR update that will force all existing MSN Messenger V7.0 users to downgrade to V6.2. This CVR is scheduled to start on 6 Oct 2004. Anyone running MSN Messenger V7.0 build 0205 will need to downgrade. If you do not downgrade, you will be unable to sign into the Messenger service. We’re unsure whether this will effect other builds.
seems its back to 6.2 for us all for a while.

HA! It’s time us messers took a shot at owning Microsoft again.
Affected by the CVR? Get the patch to continue to use 7.0 BETA! Thanks to Inky from the mess.be forums.October 7, 2004 at 2:13 pm #71062Jeff HesterKeymasterMan to think someone could release a patch and just take it to Microsoft. I thought the guys at Microsoft were supposed to be the smartest out there. lol. Well thanks for all the info detn8r.
October 27, 2004 at 12:14 pm #71099ice_cajunMemberI downloaded MSN mess 7 a couple of weeks ago. I just got back from working on the road for 3 weeks. I went to sign in to MSN 7 but it says it has an updated version but the update is MSN 6.2. Have they stopped the use of MSN 7 beta?
