Just want to make sure everyone still comes around and most importantly that everyone is okay, so doing a little roll call.
*yells out “PRESENT“* 😛
Next?
September 21, 2007 at 1:17 am #163893MrEggsaladParticipantI’m still here, but I really honestly am loosing interest in the whole thing. To be honest here, I don’t see us moving forward, and things like all the “Oh I don’t know if we should PM this person or not..I mean probably should but oh I don’t know…did you guys? No? Well I don’t know if I want to….well maybe, someone has too” GAH. =
September 21, 2007 at 3:47 am #163889DavidParticipantAlive, been very busy with classes this quarter. Job fair is next week, so preparing for that.

But we’re still getting questions from people in distress over their IM issues. Moving forward is in the eye of the beholder. This isn’t the mecca of activity it once was and many people have “grown up” and maybe away from BBB :'( No longer is this the haven for teens exploring and entering the world of IM and all things computer, because they’ve moved on to more specific sites as their competencies have changed.
And about the PM thing . . . excuse me, but I thought this was a team environment where we shared decisions. If it’s not (and I still feel rather newbish to this staff) please let me know. Some of my questions were just to check to see if others shared my concerns . . . didn’t want to seem to prudish. And didn’t want to drive away active, contributing members either.
I’ve got to get to work, but this is a good discussion here . . .
I’ll be back!
And p.s. Ryan – I love you, dude.
September 21, 2007 at 1:22 pm #163898Doris KenneyParticipantI’m here…just nursing a nasty cold at the moment LOL!
As IM progs have matured, users have settled in & become more comfortable with their use. Until a rewrite comes along to really shake things up, minor visual changes are unlikely to produce the flurry of activity we’d like. Perhaps adding a few new forums (not just off topic) specifically for other “social networking” methods (such as Facebook, Bebo, etc.) which are not truly IM based would merit some thought. I recently joined FB (reluctantly) & found adding/finding friends was nowhere near as easy as it is on IM progs & no one could tell me how to make it easier!!
While it’s not real time communication of IM/VOIP unless you choose to install the applications to make it so, these sites certainly seem to be an expanding trend especially for us (…ahem…) thirty somethings….(extending far beyond Myspace which I personally avoid.) I don’t think these site will ever replace IM’s (at least I hope not) but I bet in addition to the 1-2 IM programs we all open when the computer boots, there is at least 1 social networking non-IM based site most of us check on a daily basis as well.
Just an idea from a rather stuffed up head. It may not be viable or desireable for BBB but I was just trying to come up with something that might generate activity while still in keeping with the whole keeping in contact, finding friends thing.

September 21, 2007 at 2:08 pm #163892LucifinaMemberYO YO YO Luci still in the house! Yeppers sorry guys but school is in full swing and with my new job I’ve been very very busy. On top of that my grandmother fell and broke her hand in three places so that just makes thing harder on me, but I’m still hanging in there. And yes I do LOVE my iPhone * that’s what I’m on now sitting in a docs office hehehe.
September 21, 2007 at 5:12 pm #163888Jeff HesterKeymasterPresent and accounted for! :woot:
Here’s an update on what I’ve been up to. A year ago in August my wife and I separated. She filed for divorce shortly afterwards, and since then I’ve been going through the negotiations, managing two homes, putting one up on the market (bad timing, but oh well) and generally putting my life back together.
Part of “putting my life back together” meant spending less time in front of a computer, and more time with people. In January, I signed up to run the San Diego Maration with Team in Training. I raised $2,800 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, finished my first marathon and met some great people.
I also learned that training for a marathon is a lot of work! Most days, I was happy if I could crawl into bed by 9pm. Sleep, eat, work, train, repeat — that was my schedule for four months. It was a great experience, and I’ll probably do it again, but now I know what impact the training will have on my life and schedule.
I’m not running nearly as much as I did when I was training, preferring instead to kayak, hike and mountain bike. I now live near the coast and about 1/4 mile away from a fantastic wilderness park with great hiking and bike trails.
Back in June, serendipity stepped in and introduced me to a very special woman. We met on a kayak trip and just “clicked,” and we’ve been seeing each other ever since. I can honestly say I’ve never been happier.
I’ve been keeping busy in my professional life, too. I have a full-time job with the Fluor Corp., and business has been very good. We’ve been doing a lot of hiring and growth, and it’s meant additional responsibility and travel. I usually travel a few times a year in the U.S., but last year I was sent to the Middle East and to Europe. I was gone for nearly the entire month of November.
This November I am returning to Europe, but scaling back on the duration — this trip only includes Poland and Spain, and will last “only” 10 days.
On top of all this, I’ve been visiting friends like Sarahtowny in England, and my youngest son in the Navy back in South Carolina, my eldest son who still lives an 1-1/2 hours away with his mother, my daughter who lives three hours up the coast in Santa Barbara, my mom in San Francisco and my 93 year-old grandmother in Carlsbad (who finally ordered DSL because “life’s too short for dial-up”).
And now I’m in the midst of school. Yep, I’m a student. I’m only taking one five-unit class (Spanish 1), but it means I don’t get home until nearly 10pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays through mid-December.
What does this mean for BigBlueBall?
The net result of all the life-changing events and activity is that I’ve spent less time developing BigBlueBall (and my other websites). But don’t think that means I’ve lost interest, by any means.
I still using IM every workday, and often in the evenings and weekends, too. I’m fascinated by some of the recent developments like Twitter and IMified, and the way technology is crossing platform boundaries (working on your PC, your phone and even your game console). I like the innovative ways people are coming up with to integrate IM with other technologies.
IM, VoIP, video chat, social networking and other tools (even forums!) that support people-to-people connections are finding new life as people begin to think of their computers differently. The computer is beginning to fade into the background where it belongs, as relationships and people-to-people connections take center stage.
Nobody should feel guilty for being busy with work, school, friends and family. We should all strive for balance in our lives. And nobody should feel bad if their passion for IM wanes. It’s only natural that our interests change over time. That’s one of the reasons our staff changes over time. People move on when their interests lead them in other directions, and new people arrive to take their place.
So as you check in on this thread, please feel free to share where your interest lies, and if you’re losing the IM “bug.”
Finally, I’ve talked with a few of the staffers about ideas for reinvigorating the BBB, but I’d like to keep that discussion separate from this one. I’ll post my thoughts on that in a new topic.
Thanks to Nessa for starting this thread (reps up), and thanks to everyone on the BBB team for making the forum a real community.
September 22, 2007 at 1:26 am #163894MrOatsMember*clears throat* “Here!” 😉
I’ve been a little busy with Cross Country (long distance running), School, and I’m going on a small trip this weekend…But I manage to get here several times a week. (I’m not dead yet! :p)
September 24, 2007 at 9:30 pm #163890RabidKittenParticipantMmm okay ready for this? I’m not going to be long winded. *gasp, shock, awe*
I’m here just not as ‘ here’ as I used to be.
To be honest, as people are getting more savvy with these things, my expertise is quickly diminishing. Back in the day (When I would pay attention to the other forums…yeah THAT far back) I could just search for the problem and answer it because people were lazy. Now it’s more difficult and I’m just not as much as a help as I used to be. — well…when I was HAH! — Not to mention now that our popularity has dragged a little bit I don’t have to spend as much time prowling for spam in the intro lounge. Soooo…yeah I’m not around as much.
Not to mention that in the past year I’ve undergone two more shifts of life. For one, some of you remember I was engaged in 2006. Ehm, that ended in April of that year. We had bought a house a month before and he decided to drop me like a bad habit like he did every summer and…this time I didn’t take him back. So I moved out. Moved into my mother’s house. Then moved to the cities with a bunch of /insane/ people who made life hell. Trying to get over a 4 year relationship and the change that happens with that and finding a job since I was basically a housewife while I was with him. I went through a highly destructive and disturbed phase where I started walking late at night in the ghettos of Minneapolis, started hitchhiking again, hit a fun low and depression and self loathing and decided to run off. I cut all my hair off in a destructive fit and ended up punching out my good friend at a halloween party.
In September, I met someone who I’m still just discovering is the most astonishing person I’ve ever known and has since helped me heal up some old nasty wounds and become a happy sami again. Not to mention he shared some crazy ideal and lifelong dreams I’ve had since I was a little girl.
In October of 2K6 we left the ‘loft’ in minneapolis (okay I was thrown out and he followed) I gave up 90% of my worldly possessions except for three boxes of childhood things and a single suitcase of clothes and decided we were going to travel around the country. Basically wandered homless from place to place for a while. In February, Diem and I (that’s the guy, Diem) were requested by his sister to stay at her house for a year and help out with her three (soon to be four) children in exchange for rent. So we went back home (we discovered we lived a mile tops from eachother our whole lives and had to go 100 miles to meet) and have since been trying to help his sister’s very disfunctional family and keep some semblance of sanity.
I also work a minimum pay job at a pizza joint with Diem for money because it allows us the free scheduling to still watch the boys when we need to.
We’ve been working, paying off debt, saving up money, going on little driving trips and watching three little children under 8 years old since then. Which gets a little chaotic and crazy.
That’s the short version of what I’ve been up to. Throw in finding out my best friend has HIV and trying to help him, having a miscarriage, people I know dying, being on the road constantly and a few other details, that’s about it. Pretty typical Sami stuff for those of you who’ve known me since I arrived here back in … what, 03?
I’m here, just not ‘as here’ as I used to be. Try to put in my word when I find a relevant place.
Okay I lied, I was long winded.
And good to hear things are going well for you folks!
September 30, 2007 at 2:53 am #163891SpikeMemberI’ve really been leaning more towards games, to be honest, because that’s what I’m in school for… Game and Simulation Development. And while you think it might all be fun and games… it’s not 😉 (although some of it is).
I’ve been around here, but am losing interest. The new site is still up for anyone to do whatever with (you too Jeff), I release it to anyone or… however the legalities work, anyone can have it that wants to do with it what they want, so long as it’s in good intentions for BBB. Yeah, that should about cover it.
I’ve been busy with school and other hobbies, and just generally being more social than I used to be. Life goes on. 🙂
You know how to contact me if you need anything.
