I’m sure many of you are making the big decision of whether or not to go over to the Vista camp. So here’s a poll for you guys. Thanks for voting. You may include your own comments if you wish.
August 18, 2007 at 1:43 am #163481Jeff HesterKeymasterWhen I get a new computer, it’ll be with Vista. I’m not going to upgrade my current computer though. You need newer, better hardware to really enjoy the benefits of Vista.
I’m running Vista on an older IBM T40 laptop and it blows. Too slow, and none of the nice new visual effects. I can’t wait until they give us new computers at work!
August 18, 2007 at 10:47 am #163483DavidParticipantHow about “I already did”?
I’d rather have XP back, but Vista does add some nice things (not the visuals, but the small feature changes)
August 18, 2007 at 2:33 pm #163494PolarBearNPRParticipantDitto what Jeff said. Trying to update my computer to Vista caused so many problems . . . the hardware couldn’t handle it (or vice versa) and the software required so many tweaks . . . frustrated the heck outta me and certain family members 😉
August 18, 2007 at 5:46 pm #163488TigerbladeParticipantI went with “other” simply because I agree with two options:
Yes, when I have the money, time, etc. AND
No, it’s still too buggy. I’m happy with my present OS.Eventually, once they get it fixed (which will probably be just in time to release a new OS), I’ll think about switching. I don’t know when my next laptop purchase will be, so I may or may not go for Vista on that.
August 18, 2007 at 6:09 pm #163500Soccer4dummysMemberI’ve already got vista. Mostly because (sooner or later) Microsoft will make their software only compatible with vista. I like XP better though. It takes a while to get used to the new changes in vista. For example, it took me FOREVER to find the “all programs” in the control panel. I finally found it. it was called “programs”. Thats annoying. Why not keep it like it was? *sigh* oh well.
Oh, and another reason, Halo 2 is only compatible with vista 😀

August 18, 2007 at 7:13 pm #163493MrEggsaladParticipantWell, recently I’ve just gotten a new computer (Intel C2D 3.0GHz processor and 4GB of RAM as the high points), and Vista runs very nicely. I originally ran Vista on a AMD Athlon 3400+ (Single core 2.0 GHz processor) and with 1GB of RAM, I had no issues there at all. For me, Vista has been great. Every now and then I’d find a program that wouldn’t work but for the most part stuff was great.
Now if you are a big gamer, wait for Vista until you have good system specs. That means I’d say 2GB of RAM and at least a 2.4GHz processor to really enjoy it right.

Done 🙂
August 19, 2007 at 4:35 am #163482Jeff HesterKeymasterIt’s interesting, but I just read that PC Magazine editor-in-chief Jim Louderback, has reversed his support for Vista. “I’ve been a big proponent of the new OS over the past few months, even going so far as loading it onto most of my computers and spending hours tweaking and optimizing it. So why, nine months after launch, am I so frustrated? The litany of what doesn’t work and what still frustrates me stretches on endlessly. The upshot is that even after nine months, Vista just ain’t cutting it. I definitely gave Microsoft too much of a free pass on this operating system: I expected it to get the kinks worked out more quickly. Boy, was I fooled! If Microsoft can’t get Vista working, I might just do the unthinkable: I might move to Linux.”

Same here. I like it over XP, all the apps that I run seem to work better overall.
August 19, 2007 at 2:26 pm #163484DavidParticipantI’m writing this message from my Thinkpad T60 which I just put XP back on. Vista just didn’t work for me, I gave it a chance, ran it since February, and I just couldn’t take it anymore. There were problems with the new Windows Mobile Device Center, driver issues with my Samsung Blackjack (couldn’t do internet connection sharing unless I switched it into modem mode).
Not only that, but I didn’t like the new UI, I prefer XP Luna Blue over anything else… so it didn’t make sense to keep it. I’ll go back once it’s solid, and I’m sure it will be… but my hardware isn’t fast enough at this point for there to be any point.
August 19, 2007 at 5:52 pm #163492SpikeMemberAh, so you go for the Fisher-Price look, heh.
August 19, 2007 at 8:33 pm #163495PolarBearNPRParticipantTo quote a friend of mine who is on Yahoo (ALOT) “Vista? Noooooooo!” This was what she said when I explained why she hadn’t seen me online ALL week; the week I ventured into Vistaland. :p
She installed it and was faced with so many problems that she “took it off.”
Just another data point.
August 19, 2007 at 8:45 pm #163490AwesomeSauceParticipantIt’s funny how this poll has options for “No, too expensive” or “No, never got around to it”. Where’s the option for “No, because I just don’t want to”? As for now, I see no appeal in Vista.
Spike;222111 wrote:Ah, so you go for the Fisher-Price look, heh. But, Vista really doesn’t look that much better. At all. Fortunately, in XP, you could simply change the theme to classic Windows style (I don’t know what the theme options for Vista are). I’ll admit, there are some visual aspects of Vista that look pretty cool, but overall it’s pretty much just as ugly as XP.
It pains me when my favorite app gets updated with a horrendous new GUI. MSN Messenger, for example, looked great in the days of 5.x. Now, whenever I see Windows Live Messenger, I have to shield my eyes. It makes me throw up a little bit when I look at it. Last time I checked, there was no way to skin it either.
This is one of the smaller reasons why I like Linux. The default GNOME desktop is great.
