I was just reading this new thread about capturing web cam stuff, fake web cam . . . and thought it weird that there would be 3 posts all by newbies, all within a half an hour . . . I don’t see anything “wrong” here, but do think this is all the same poster . . . Anyone with more knowledge of this subject know if this is spam? Or is it just a very strange coincidence?
July 19, 2007 at 2:06 pm #162912PolarBearNPRParticipantNew member Suzan seems to be a post monkey . . . posting quick comments, but obviously not reading the post (no one could read those and post in the space of a minute) and she has links (different ones) in her signature always.
So, powers that be . . . what do ya think?
July 19, 2007 at 4:21 pm #162908LucifinaMembermmmm looks lil’spammy to me…besides do we want to be preceived as a site that condones “cam catching”.
July 19, 2007 at 6:33 pm #162902DavidParticipantI only see one post… and it’d be spam, but it applies to the context of the thread, no?
July 19, 2007 at 6:50 pm #162913PolarBearNPRParticipantYeah – one post, but 3 posters within a half an hour at that time of the morning seemed suspect to me. Like it was the same person registering 3 “personas” to push that subject. Like Nicole said . . . do we want to condone (or explain how to do) the cam catching stuff?
Then, rather than start a new thread, I thought I’d mention the Suzan poster – “she” has bunches of posts all within a short time frame with no real information, just sorta – “heh, I liked that” and links in her signature to a variety of sites. Each one different. Dunno – just smelled a little fishy to me.
July 19, 2007 at 10:20 pm #162903SpikeMemberThe first three posts in that thread were set up all by oen person to advertise his product. It’s a nasty tactic some companies will use, asking and then answering their own questions on forums. Check otu the software… if it’s freeware, and it does what it’s supposed to, fine, leave it. But don’t let that compan make money off of us, or if it’s adware or spyware, delete it.
July 19, 2007 at 10:57 pm #162914PolarBearNPRParticipantHah! I knew there was something weird about it! Thanks for the confirmation, Spike. So . . . do we delete the thread then?

Just didn’t seem normal to me. It’s good to know that there really was something fishy about it. :p
What do we do about this? Spike? Dave? Just leave it or trash it?
July 20, 2007 at 8:13 pm #162904SpikeMemberCheck out the software. If there’s any way they can make money off of it, delete the thread or just remove any reference to the product (i.e. “Check out my new Program XXXXX at this website: XXXXXXX”).
July 21, 2007 at 11:09 pm #162897detn8rParticipantTo be completely honest, I don’t think registering multiple accounts to boost a product compromises BBB’s image, so if it happens, let it happen. Obviously if the product is garbage, it’ll be buried in a matter of a week.
As for programs that cost money, if it’s relevant to the forum section it was posted in, I wouldn’t consider that ‘spam’.
Referral links and discount codes etc. are different stories, but programs that cost money (such as YTK) are fine by me.
Now for the integrity of the topic at hand, that’s a different story. Webcam recording programs could be compared to Buddy Spy.
July 22, 2007 at 4:30 am #162905SpikeMemberdetn8r: So, you’re fine with little companies trying to make a quick buck by leeching off our users? Cause I’m certainly not.
July 22, 2007 at 5:58 am #162898detn8rParticipantWhat do you think YTK does? YTunnel? Versoworks (ala messenger:mate) … AIM add ons?
A quick buck? Spike, just because programmers choose to bill it’s customers for their work doesn’t make them searching for a quick buck. So what if they advertise their products here, if someone is interested in what they are selling and buys it, than what is the problem? This is a information based website.
No one is gaining anything besides the programmer here. I just don’t understand how you believe that this is not acceptable.
If the program is relevant to the forum section (as this was — webcam recording in webcam section) than it fits the bill.
As for making a quick buck, I’m now accepting PayPal donations thru my link. PM me for more information.
And just something to think about — if that thread pops up in a Google search and leads them to this guys website, were they ever legitimately our users anyway?
July 23, 2007 at 4:13 am #162910imported_Ven0mMemberTrue, but YTK and Y!Tunnel has free versions which kinda makes up for that.
I think it works both ways, if you Google search for YTK Pro for example, you notice that links to BBB are displayed as the 5th and 6th results. That brings attention to this website, from those who are looking for specific help a certain program does. Lots of people come to BBB for help about Yahoo related things for example, and sometimes pay programs like YTK and Y!Tunnel provide a solution to the person’s problem(s).
Now things like YTK Pro and Y!Tunnel don’t really have anything malicious about them in nature. Programs like webcam recorders are actually illegal, especially since they can be used by pedophiles and other people who record cams without permission.
Now, talking about fake webcams (software driver webcams) is alright, as long as it isn’t being used maliciously in a bad way in my opinion.
There’s a thick line between pay software that actually gives users benefits, and software that is malicious and sometimes illegal in nature.
Just my 2 cents. 🙂

Ven0m, you are right. More so, I wanted to stress about the facts that I stated. AND, YTK was being advertised here before there ever was a free version as well, don’t you forget 😉
But, as I stated in my first post, I’m not a fan of the webcam recording anyways, and like I said it fits the bill (in my eyes) with Buddy Spy — where we allow one, it should be OK to allow the other.
July 23, 2007 at 9:31 pm #162911imported_Ven0mMemberYTK was actually advertised here before a public release of the Pro version. *laughs* Yea, I’m not a fan of webcam recorders either, but perhaps if there’s a disclaimer added to it, it may help some?
