There is now confirmation that Microsoft will shelf MSNM/WLM in favor of Skype and will move all current WLM users over to the Skype platform. How will this affect users of third party programs and apps such as Pidgin on the computer and IM+ on the smartphone? Will we still be able to log into those with our current MSNM accounts, or will we have to create a new login with Skype?
November 12, 2012 at 3:22 am #178603Jeff HesterKeymasterSango, it’s not clear exactly what will happen to third-party IM clients, or when. For now, Adium, Trillian, et. al. will still connect to a valid WLM account. But from the sounds of it, the WLM servers will be moth-balled sometime in the first quarter of 2013.
I suspect, although this is not confirmed, that unless the third-party app provides connectivity to Skype, they won’t provide ANY way to connect with your old WLM contacts.
Incidentally, we’ve also got some news about the retirement of WLM here at BigBlueBall: Windows Messenger is Dead… Long Live Skype.
November 12, 2012 at 3:30 am #178607PhilipModeratorI personally abhor the idea of moving to Skype (I have never liked Skype), being so used to WLM all these years. Whatever its misdeeds, I will miss WLM badly and will continue to use it until the giant M moth-balls it for good.
February 14, 2013 at 3:36 pm #178605DermotParticipantThe MSNP will still be present, Skype will also use it.
The windows live messenger application will be blacklisted at the server level
This means adium, pidgin etc will work for the near future even though windows live messenger does not.
But i’d imagine this is will just be for another year/two at best.

July 15, 2013 at 2:05 pm #178606Sango1977MemberIt’s just as I had feared. On IM+, on my Droid 4, I’m able to log into the Skype protocol with my MSN login, but for some reason, none of my MSN contacts shows up, nor can they see me.
On Pidgin, Skype doesn’t work at all unless you have the official Skype client installed and running in the background, which defeats the purpose of the third party client.
MS really dropped the ball on this transition and left its users high and dry. But hey, it wouldn’t be the first time!
July 16, 2013 at 10:51 pm #178604DermotParticipantI’d imagine that is IM+’s job to maintain the newer skype MSNP connection, if it’s still using the older one then it’s pretty evident it will run into issues since it’s not supported anymore officially.
However the MSNP used for the old wlm should still work until early 2014 stated @ Live Connect Developer Center
Quote:We recently announced that we’ll begin to encourage Messenger users to start using Skype. As a result, the Messenger developer program will end. Existing implementations that use Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) will continue to work until October 2013. Existing implementations that use MSP will continue to work until March 2014. -
