this morning I was just looking through all the ads and brochures that office depot, dell, circuit city, etc… send out on Sundays. What really caught my eye was the sales that Dell has. Why doesn’t Apple hold similar sales like Dell? It would definitely make buying a Mac much easier on regular people like me who don’t have TONS of money. To me, it just makes sense for Apple to have a sale every once in a while, I would think that they would get a lot more buyers… Does anyone know why they have such high-priced products in the midst of other computers that can be bought for much much less?
(don’t take that the wrong way… I’m not whining or anything, and I know that there is a difference between macs and windows computers, I just wanna know why Apple doesn’t have any sales)

If you want a Mac, you have to buy it from Apple, period. Maybe they figure they don’t need to discount their product to sell.
November 28, 2004 at 8:21 pm #106182colinMemberI don’t know if this is completley right, but in the schools around here, we mainly buy Macs. Maybe they get most of there business from schools, and not individuals, that they don’t need to discount their products. That’s just my guess though.
November 28, 2004 at 8:27 pm #106186FirefoxManMemberI see ya’lls point, but to me, I would hold a sale everyonce in a while. I would think that if you make a great product, and sell it for less money once in a while (like a holiday sale, etc…) lots of regular consumers like us would be more willing to buy a mac…. does that make sense?

I think so too. I sure would be a LOT more likely to buy a Mac in a given week, if it was $100 less for that week. I’m not sure how large their profit margins are though.
November 28, 2004 at 9:23 pm #106187FirefoxManMemberI’m in high school, and a job for teens only pays so much… If only there was a way for students to buy macs at a reasonable price. That’s what I want, cuz my parents are windows users, but they’re willing to get me a mac if I pay for most of it… but wanting a powerbook that costs almost $2000 dollars compared to our new Dell which cost about half of that (and it’s a really nice, reliable desktop too), it’s hard to make that commitment y’know when you’ve been so used to the prices of windows computers…
November 28, 2004 at 10:33 pm #106177CharlesMemberApple had a student offer for back to school that allowed you to get an iBook and iPod together for a discount…
Otherwise, I have no idea why they don’t have sales, but they do have promotional products like the U2 iPod.
November 28, 2004 at 11:38 pm #106181RabidKittenParticipantSpeaking of apples, does anyone else think that it’s just plain funny how they stocked up every school at first with their computers hoping that if kids grew up learning on their machines, they’d continue using them and their parents may even go that way as long as the kids were familiar with it, but in the end it didn’t work for them. I mean, not until really recently have I heard of people really getting out and buying apple computers. And by recently I mean the past 5 years and some. And by people I mean like the joe schmoes, the elite don’t count. I just have to laugh every time I think about that. They stocked the schools full in hopes to get a jump start on the market and it just didn’t work out for em.
November 29, 2004 at 12:45 am #106188FirefoxManMemberwell I think that Apples day is coming. With the iPod becoming more popular, people are bound to look into more of Apple’s products. Apple also is giving Microsoft a run for it’s money w/ the new iMacs and the future release of OSX Tiger. Home users are becoming more aware of the looming threat of viruses and spyware and are now doing their homework when buying computers. Linux is also getting bigger too. The Unix revolution is near, it’s just not happening yet. Just watch, Microsoft probably is going to have to step it up to keep lots of people worldwide from switching from other systems…
November 29, 2004 at 1:11 am #106179DavidParticipantMicrosoft will move to Unix if they have to. They won’t just fall out of the market soon. Apple is going nowhere, it’s Linux that’s coming of age, it doesn’t need Apple hardware, it’s all x86, you can even run it on your MS box.
November 29, 2004 at 1:50 am #106189FirefoxManMemberdo you really think that microsoft would be willing to make a switch like that? I’m not an expert of anything that has to do with the core of of OSX or Windows, but isn’t Windows now based off of its own WinNT. And if Microsoft moves to Unix, wouldn’t they have to make some major changes to Windows itself?
I totally agree that Linux is coming of age, but I don’t think that regular users are going to just go out and get a distro of Linux, not everyone is knowlegable enough to burn ISO’s to a disc, or how to setup partitions, etc… I predict that a mainstream company is going to have to advertise and distribute preinstalled Linux machines before everyone goes out and starts buying. but again, i’m no expert, i’m just making a reasonable guess.

They could still dump NT and go UNIX core. They have the programmers, the time and the money.
November 29, 2004 at 2:50 am #106190FirefoxManMembertrue. But do you think Windows would be as good as it was when they were with WinNT as the core of their product, or do you think it would be kinda like a whole new product with a lot of bugs?
November 29, 2004 at 4:24 am #106183kyuubiMemberummm…..it’s quite intersting. Too be honest, it’s quite difficult to justify my G5 for about….$4000 comparing to some of my friend’s PC for less than half of the money. It’s quite true that Apple’s computer is expensive, but on the plus side, you need to be looking at what you are getting.
But I do understand you in why Apple don’t have a sale. The truth is, Apple is on sale. Only at different things. The iPods for example is on sale almost everyday. See, they’re doing this because they know that people recognize Apple’s name from the iPod. And their sales are going up stedly so they are making many sales with the iPods. But why not the computers? Well… the best possibility is that Macs (compuers) are Simply not getting enough attention and popularity. And think. If you are thinking of buying a Mac, How do YOU Justify your money spend compering to a PC?. And for some people, it’s simply not worth it.
And I guess, Apple did their homework this time and decide not to make any stupid decision before they have a solid base. And so that’s why Apple so far is not holding any sales. They are simply playing it safe (Remeber of all the time they have shoot them selfs in the foot?) and I think it is better for them to do that until they can get a certain Percentage of Mac Computer users in the world to own and love a Mac. I know I do. 😀
November 29, 2004 at 5:42 am #106191FirefoxManMemberWell Macs hold about 2% of the market share when it comes to computers. And I will admit that although you get a lot of bang for your buck w/ Apple products, a sale here and there is always nice. And if I were Steve Jobs, I would want to be able to compete with the rest of the computer manufacturing world, and offer competitive prices on my product. But that’s just me. And I will admit that not ALL of Apple products are outrageously priced, they just walk the line with people like you and me. But the investment is a good one I believe, macs do last quite a while, and perform extremely well. But look at it this way, as fast as our technology is developing nowadays who knows what will become of OSX and Windows in the future, even Linux!
