It started raining in early May and I know in the uk you all presume it rains all the time, but mostly we get it during the winter months.
The rain stated and just has not stopped one day. Last month I was on my usual round of my Friday routine and the road down the lane was up to about half way up the wheels of my car. So I turned around asap as it was up to the wheel arch, I called the traffic police and they closed the road. Never ever happened before and I was scared stiff the water was rising by the minute. But I did know the road and this young guy followed my route and as I turned off to my village gave me a thumbs up as I had helped him through the flood.
I am up north in England but last week in the south they got 2 months rain in one day and thats after two months of it! There are parts on England that will not have had fresh water for at least a week and food has run dry. The sky is still dark and more rain is forecast. As I write this it’s still pouring down. All motorways are still on emergency warning.
Now tell me there is no global warming …

Have been watching the news and such about the unavailability of drinkable water. To think we have these issues in these modern times . . . yes, “global warming” or whatever, we are still at the mercy of the elements.
Stay as dry as you can! And keep us updated on the situation.

The world as a whole is advanced enough to no longer be strongly affected by things like this, if we wanted that. A revamp of the water supply and drainage systems all over the world (or in first-world countries anyway) is very possible, the technology exists and the manpower to accomplish it. But is that what we really want? Is it worth the billions of [tax] dollars? It’s not, we’d rather spend it on things that are more likely to affect us now; better to invest in Education or Transportation than something that is only going to affect a small, unpredictable portion of the people each year. This is the same answer to the question “Why don’t we all drive flying cars?” It’s not because the technology doesn’t exist, it’s because that isn’t what we want, and isn’t what we need.
Anyway, I hope everyone is doing okay through it all.
July 27, 2007 at 2:40 am #163025AnnaParticipantI remember driving into Las Vegas once, apparently on the day of a flash flood. The locals were saying once a year they get a flash flood or so, all the streets in North LV were flooded.
The water was about the same height, driving in an SUV (except on the other side of the road ;)) and water was still leaking in from the bottom of the doors…
