First up I’m new here but not new to forums. I’d like to thank everyone that reads this in advance for their time and assure you that I read the FAQ and ran several searches for similar threads.
I have been fighting a problem in Yahoo Messenger for over a year and I’m stumped. The first 3-5 times I try to enter a chat room yahoo crashes with the message below. It started with a clean install of Vista 32 Ultimate when I built this PC and I figured I’d live with it until Windows 7. Well I did a clean slate install of Windows 7 64bit and and a clean install of Messanger 9.0.0.2152 I still get the exact same error 3-5 times before I successfully enter a room. The only way around it seems to be renaming yacscom.dll and doing without voice.
I’m running a Core 2 Quad in a Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 MB with 6GB of RAM. All windows patches and drivers are up to date and my AV is NOD32. Any ideas? Is there a known issue with the ALC889A onboard audio?
TIA!!!

That exception code is an access violation – basically something in the process is trying to read memory it does not have access to.
It can also be a sign of bad RAM. Before doing too much troubleshooting test the RAM.
Memtest86+ – Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool
Let it run for at least 3 or 4 hours.
November 26, 2009 at 5:51 pm #175939shollingMemberThank you for the welcome and the suggestion. Per your advice I ran MemTest86 for about 8 hours last night – 5 complete passes. It found no errors. I’m running my system with some fairly conservative settings – well below the RAM’s factory rated speeds. All drivers are up to date and as I said this continued even after a clean slate OS upgrade. Sound works fine for everything else but Yahoo Messenger.

2) Since you have a 64bit system make sure wow64 is handling the YIM executable (yahoo messenger 10 should be handled fine)
3) Have you ran messenger as admin to see if you get the same access violation?

Thanks for your help. I’ve upgraded from 9x to the latest version of 10 I still get the same error. With a change in yahoo versions and operating systems it almost has to to an audio chipset incompatability. I cant think of anything else.
