Yahoo ghosts are Id’s that are not on your friends list that you can see them come online and then go offline.
If you open am pm box for them and there cam is on, you will see view my webcam next to there ID.
If anyone has more information about Yahoo ghosts post here.
February 10, 2007 at 4:33 pm #157859mfenechMemberIt’s probably the biggest mystery glitch from Yahoo in the last year.
From what I’ve noticed, you will only see them while you’re in a room. I haven’t seen any patterns as to what name shows up and in what circumstance, although the names appears right when they log in. And yes, the PM window will look as if it’s an online name currently on your friends list, including status message, display image, music track selection, and cam availability.
If the name looks interesting, I’ll click it before it disappears and may even strike up a conversation. Some names are bots, but most are real people. I’ve seen names of two people I knew already, one I knew from a few years ago and one I see in a music room regularly.
And I thought the term ‘Ghost’ meant a name that remains on a room list after the person was booted or otherwise disconnected abruptly.
February 10, 2007 at 4:42 pm #157853Jeff HesterKeymasterThis I thought was the term ghost, oh well. There are a few for me but at least one that is a real person I just viewed his cam. It is whenever he comes online it does not matter if i am in a chat room or not. I am so sick of it he is always logging on and off.

Ironically, I’ve made friends from those who IMed me after I appeared to ‘come online’. 😀
P.S. The programs in my signature do ‘fix’ this issue on the user’s side. 😉
February 10, 2007 at 9:51 pm #157856DermotParticipantThis has been happening a long time.
I believe you’re actually seeing someone in the rooms buddy reports
Yahoo! sends these reports three times and i guess they messed up somewhere.
If you do see strangers coming online on the alert bar just ignore it as they are not on your buddylist and they don’t see you either and probally getting strangers on their alerts also.
But if you’re the curious kind like kingofchaos6669 you can message them if you’re bored and maybe make a new friend, the decision is yours.
🙂

That’s kinda strange, because:
1. A number of ‘ghosts’ I’ve seen are bots.
2. Most of the names I’ve checked are oriental (I can’t read their profile pages.) or are very young (20 or below), and I always park in various 40’s rooms.February 11, 2007 at 3:45 am #157854Jeff HesterKeymasterIts different for everyone. I don’t even have to be in a chat room for them to show logging on.

I wonder if it is tied to the “Can’t ignore yourself” error. They started about the same time.
I reported the “Can’t ignore yourself” error to bugtraq Yahoo! Messenger Chat Room Denial of Service Vulnerability
Also I just reported it to idefense.com and secunia.comFebruary 11, 2007 at 9:24 pm #157857DermotParticipantI believe it’s down to YMSG15 personally
It handles buddies different than all the rest.
Whatever they did from that i think thats what is causing it.
