Hi, I have had an issue with Yahoo Messenger for a couple of years now. It used to work fine, and then I had to have my HDD replaced. Since then Yahoo just won’t work right. It used to not work at all, but I finally am able to keep it open long enough to IM someone. Other than that the settings won’t stick, and if I right click anything, including the tray icon it gives me this error message:
Y!traywnd: yahoohmessnger.exe application error….0xc00000f0…0x6361894. I have searched for answers, and even asked Yahoo for help. I have nothing!!!!! I have tried older versions, new versions, beta versions, but none work! Anyone have any clue why?
Thanks,
Wendy
February 4, 2008 at 8:58 pm #166714imported_Ven0mMemberI’d try uninstalling Yahoo! Messenger completely and reinstalling it.
February 5, 2008 at 1:12 am #166721seasonedwthsaltMemberI’ve uninstalled/reinstalled many many mannnny times. Like I said, I have even tried different versions of it. I have no luck.
February 5, 2008 at 3:47 am #166715YahooliganMemberHave you tried the web version? Or a third party web client like Meebo? Try that and make sure it’s not something screwed up with your account.
February 5, 2008 at 3:55 am #166722seasonedwthsaltMemberYes, I have tried the online version and Meebo as well as Trillian. I liked them, but I really like Yahoo Messenger. Plus, it bugs me when I can’t figure out how to fix something!!! I am the person people come to, to fix their computers. haha! Well, thanks for your help. I suppose I’ll just delete it, and continue using Trillian or the online version.

February 5, 2008 at 7:03 pm #166713DermotParticipantTry removing Yahoo! Messenger by force what their uninstaller will not
Y! Remover.zip will do this for you.
If you use any skinning programs that are changing taskbar please make YahooMessenger.exe an exception in the exclusions area of the skinning program.
February 5, 2008 at 9:05 pm #166723seasonedwthsaltMemberYes, I already have that exception included for Windowblinds, but it has to change. I’ve tried it both ways.
I’ll uninstall it using the tool. Maybe there are some things I’m missing even in the registry.
Thanks! I’ll get back to you!

February 9, 2008 at 6:25 am #166725seasonedwthsaltMemberOk, I uninstalled Yahoo using the tool. I waited a couple of days, and just dl Yahoo again hoping that it would work right. Nope! Now I get this error:
Y!traywnd: yahoom~1.exe application error
0xc00000fd…….0x63618ca4=-( This is making me very irritated at either Yahoo or HP!
Can anyone give me any feedback now?
Thanks so much,
Wendy
February 9, 2008 at 8:46 am #166716PhilipModeratorHi Wendy,
Welcome to BBB. I did some searching for Y!traywnd and found that Trend Micro reports it to be a Backdoor Litmus.002 trojan. Here are the steps to remove it:
1. Click START>RUN, type REGEDIT then hit the Enter key.
2. Locate the “Taskschd” key following the path below and delete it:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun
3. Find and delete the TRAYWND.EXE file in the Windows folder.
4. Reboot your system.
5. Scan your system with Trend Micro antivirus and delete all files detected as BKDR_LITMUS.002. To do this, Trend Micro customers must download the latest pattern file and scan their system. Other email users may use HouseCall, Trend Micro’s free online virus scanner.I hope this helps, and that it works!
February 9, 2008 at 4:33 pm #166726seasonedwthsaltMemberHi,
I thought that it might be a virus, but when I searched I could find no information about it. I am so glad you did though!
I am going to try your suggestion right now, and I’ll let you know, again, how it works!
Thanks,
Wendy
February 9, 2008 at 5:51 pm #166724seasonedwthsaltMemberOk, my registry does not contain that key, and the Trend Micro scan did not yield that virus!
What now?
Wendy
I have been looking at other threads, and apparently there is a major problem with Yahoo doing the same thing to other people. I wonder why Yahoo does not have an answer for it. I did talk to someone there. They emailed me once, and after I replied stating that what the files they told me to delete were not on my computer they did not get back in touch with me. I just thought I’d let you guys know.
February 10, 2008 at 9:18 am #166717PhilipModeratorWendy, many sites, including PC Review (UK) report these files ShellTraywnd.exe and Traywnd.exe as trojans. Try the following steps:
- Download and extract the Autoruns program by Sysinternals to C:Autoruns (create this new folder yourself). Unzip the program using WinRAR or any unzipping program.
- Reboot into Safe Mode so that the malware is not started when you are doing these steps. Many malware monitor the keys that allow them to start and if they notice they have been removed, will automatically replace that startup key. For this reason booting into safe mode allows us to get past that defense in most cases.
- Navigate to the C:Autoruns folder you created in Step 1 and double-click on autoruns.exe.
- When the program starts, click on the Options menu and enable the following options by clicking on them. This will place a checkmark next to each of these options.
Include empty locations
Verify Code Signatures
Hide Signed Microsoft Entries - Then press the F5 key on your keyboard to refresh the startups list using these new settings.
- The program shows information about your startup entries in many different tabs. For the most part, the filename you are looking for will be found under the Logon or the Services tabs, but you should check all the other tabs to make sure they are not loading elsewhere as well. Click on each tab and look through the list for the filename that you want to remove. The filename will be found under the Image Path column. There may be more than one entry associated with the same file as it is common for malware to create multiple startup entries.Once you find the entry that is associated with the malware, you want to delete that entry so it will not start again on the next reboot. To do that right click on the entry and select delete. This startup entry will now be removed from the Registry.
- Now that we made it so it will not start on boot up, you should delete the file using My Computer or Windows Explorer. If you can not see the file, it may be hidden. To unhide files, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Folder Options. On the View tab, click on Show hidden files and folders. Click OK. Do a search for ShellTraywnd.exe and Traywnd.exe in your C: drive. If you find one or both of these files, delete them.
- When you are finished removing the malware entries from the Registry and deleting the files, reboot into normal mode as you will now be clean from the infection.
February 14, 2008 at 4:48 am #166727seasonedwthsaltMemberHi, I downloaded the application. I started safe mode, and did a search. There are on files by the names you have given me.
Anything else we can do, now?

Presumably you meant “There are no files by the names you have given me.” This is certainly strange as in an earlier post you quoted Y!traywnd showing up as an application error. I’d like to help you further with this; is it possible for you to install Windows Live Messenger so we can chat? You can find my Windows Live ID by clicking on my name and clicking on View Public Profile.
February 14, 2008 at 10:49 pm #166728seasonedwthsaltMemberYes, I meant on, and saw that I made that typo after I already posted. I know that it shows up as an application error. It’s very strange. I think I am just going to download Pidgin or Trillian again. I don’t use the Windows messenger, but I do have AIM installed. If you want to chat using AIM then send me a private message with your sn, and I will give you mine as well.
Thanks so much for all of your help.
Wendy
I just uninstalled Yahoo again with the removal tool. I was getting tired of dealing with it. If I need to dl it again let me know. I’m sorry to be so much trouble.
