First up thanks for this great site…found lots of tips and fixes already.
I have 2 questions and would appreciate any help available.
1. I share a pc and would like to know if there is any way to stop yahoo logging profiles and activity log files automatically? I know you can go in and delete it all but it’s a long winded process each time.
2. Have tried most of the status changer plug-ins suggested here and can’t find one that will work without saving id and password – (back to shared pc issue)June 8, 2006 at 3:46 pm #145966Eagle_KiwiMemberHello Kate – and a belated welcome to BigBlueBall 🙂
As long as neither user has their id/password automatically remembered then there’s no “normal” way the other person could see anything of yours.
But they COULD go into the actual files and probably view at least your message history files – so –
Have you been into Preferences, Archive, and turned both those options OFF ?As for the status changer, I’m not sure exactly what you mean. I use HyperIM, but only on my single-user PC here. Why do you need a status changer, if it seems to pose a risk in your case ?
(By the way, I amended your thread title, as “Help please” won’t catch the eye of those with ideas on this particular topic)
June 12, 2006 at 1:11 am #145969katesMemberI’ve turned off the Archive options…but the log still shows all the id’s of any im’s sent and received (not that it’s a big deal but some people seem to get a kick out of checking it out and that’s annoying.) No matter, I’ll just continue to delete the log etc…and yes you’re right, the status changer isn’t really necessary. New pc on the way just for me then this won’t be an issue any more.
June 13, 2006 at 12:16 pm #145965babebounce2004Participantin the new yahoo you can choose whether to save the archive on your computer or not. If you don’t save the archives then no contacts will remain listed under your id on your harddrive. Your id, however, remains.
June 14, 2006 at 12:09 am #145970katesMemberthanks babebounce2004..I have the archive bit covered but the file I was talking about is “ypager.log” (and also “yacs.log” ocassionally found in my Windows directory), where there is a log recorded, not showing IM’s but does show all id’s of messages sent and received.
June 18, 2006 at 9:28 am #145967Eagle_KiwiMemberThat seems a valid point you have, Kate.
It seems there’s no easy solution. But from what I’ve read (e.g. here) you could set that file as Read-Only, which I guess would simply mean YM couldn’t update it any more.
This might be more lasting than remembering to delete it every session, as I gather it will just recreate itself next time anyway.Just for the record, here’s a sample of what shows in YPager.log: (xxx’s are mine)
On 08:26:44.062| —- 2006/06/18 —-
On 08:26:44.062| #Start Session::User connecting to net direct

On 10:09:08.178| P2P: socket, Received FD_CLOSE, sock:xxxxJune 19, 2006 at 1:33 am #145971katesMemberThanks for that…and the article is an interesting read. Have made the file read only as suggested (and yes it does recreate itself if deleted).
June 24, 2006 at 12:54 pm #145968Eagle_KiwiMemberHere’s some updated info from KateS, re YM v8:-
the offending file is no longer there….BUT….we now have a new folder “logs” – three files appear in mine…..”billing_user name.log” – “client_user name.log” and “network_user name.log” – and you guessed it, the client file has similar information stored as the old YPager.log.
I find also:
GIPS.log, p2pce.log, voice.log, YSDP.log, YSIP.log in that folder.
(These are perhaps all related to using voice). Also now, I notice under Help in my YM 8 it now has “Disable Logging”, which appears to solve the problem.
When I disable YM seems to restrict log entries to simply “**started**” and “**stopped**” for Billing and Client, but still genuine entries in Network, though these appear to give nothing serious away.
(Amazing – Yahoo actually “listen” !!? 😉 ) 😎
June 26, 2006 at 5:45 pm #145963EliteNickMemberYes indeed it does look like Yahoo! is listening, lol.
Sorry kates…the reason most of the status changer programs have to have the “remember my ID & password” checked is because Yahoo! will create an entry in the registry that says Yahoo! ID, which is the last logged in ID, but only if remember my ID & password is checked. My program (and a few others) use that string to get the ID of the person so we can create statuses in the persons profile section in the registry (yahoo/pager/profiles/the_current_screen_name/Custom Msgs). I’m currently looking at a way to simply get the screen name off of Yahoo! Messenger though using API, since I know people like you don’t like checking that option when it’s a shared computer.
And yes, HyperYM doesn’t need that to be done because I think his program “injects” Yahoo! Messenger, and doesn’t ever use any of Yahoo’s registry.
June 28, 2006 at 12:30 am #145972katesMemberProblem solved!!! At last I have my new pc so privacy no longer such an issue.
Nick…. I have the latest version loaded and it’s working like a dream…thanks
Have also tried the Yahoo Music Engine plugin which works well EXCEPT that if I happen to be “offline to everyone else” – as soon as a song is played it changes the status to “online to everyone else” (not really sure that’s a problem but I would imagine that if someone had deleted a buddy from their list then they would be showing as visible????).
Thanks to everyone for their help.June 28, 2006 at 1:24 am #145964EliteNickMemberYou’re welcome, sounds like the plugin your using just doesn’t check to see if you’re invisible or not before it sets the status.
June 28, 2006 at 1:28 am #145973katesMemberNick….not sure, I checked all the settings and couldn’t find anything there apart from the option to “show what’s playing”……..think I might stick to your programme
