Doris KenneyParticipant
I’m running Vista as well…had a bit of trouble with uPnP. When you check Tools / Options / Connections…..does it show you’re on a uPnP connection or a non-uPnP. Vista has this blocked automatically and it made a dramatic difference in the performance on voice and cam on mine when I realized it and enabled it. Here’s a link on how to get it enabled in Vista if you haven’t already.

As with everything Vista they call it by a different name now….Network Discovery…but it’s what you’re after I think. If you already have it enabled let me know…I’ll ponder it some more as well. I’d like to know if it fixes your problem.
Good luck!
DorisDoris KenneyParticipantPlease see private msg.
Doris KenneyParticipantWell the warning between your computer and the modem means alot. Basically it’s telling you there’s a problem sending the data from your computer to the modem….and thus out to the internet, and of course back again.
* Did you recently update or install any new firewall programs on the computers?
* What type of router do you have? (since you have a laptop I assume it’s a wireless router??
* Does your router have a built in firewall? … If so it can conflict with the firewall you may have on your actual machines – causing problems. My router does have a built in so I’ve disabled the one on my laptop and my pc.
* Have you updated the firmware on your router? And also made sure the time as per your router is the same as on your computer? A discrepancy in the time/date between the router and WLM can also cause problems.Since you had no lag with a direct pc to broadband connection, but you do with the machines accessing a router (I think) then I’d be reasonably sure its either a router setting or a firewall issue. The firewall one is the easiest to tackle ….but the router may be next lol!
Doris KenneyParticipantSince it’s only on your PC & happens with multiple accounts – I’m guessing it’s something in your system – not MSN. Advanced Windows Care is a free program & in addition to scanning for spyware etc, also looks at possible performance issues & bottlenecks causing your system to slow down. I know I ran it on one of my PC’s & had dramatic improvement in speed & performance especially internet related. Another good (free) resource is PCPitstop.com. You can do a test of your system, with suggestions & instructions on how to tweak it for best performance.
Hope this helps….and sometimes WLM is simply slower than other times…it may resolve itself in a few days, but uninstalling & reinstalling if it was previously working properly is probably not going to be the solution.
Good Luck!
The other question would be is there any trouble with any other intenet related activities? Could it be a slow internet connection causing this? Did you change anything on your PC or the network you’re on when this started happening?
Doris KenneyParticipantI would tend to agree it sounds like your WLM install is corrupted. I’m running 2 computers with XP SP2 & all fixes applied & don’t have those issues with webcam. However, when you do a straight uninstalll there are typically folders, files & registry entries that don’t get removed as a part of the uninstall process.
I personally don’t like doing all the manual work to go find all of these & have found 2 satisfactory (for me) solutions (both free.) Revouninstaller will do a scan before & after the install to find related files remaining after an uninstall has finished & let you delete them. Also CCleaner, under the “issues” tab will show similar items & allow you to delete them. I’d suggest an uninstall & taking the time to be sure WLM is completely wiped from the computer before reinstalling. If you’re comfortable doing all the registry cleanup & deleting yourself, you can search the forums for “uninstall WLM”. I know I’ve seen threads on exactly where all the excess files &d entries are.
After it’s completely gone, try a fresh install & see if that helps. It’s tempting to say it’s all because the drivers for your specific camera were not loaded from the software, but if even clicking the webcam settings shuts it down I suspect that’s not the case. I’d expect it simply not to recognize your cam or to show your cam in setup but not connect properly. uPnP would cause issues with accepting or sending cam, but you’re not even getting that far so I doubt it’s the problem either.
Good Luck!
Doris KenneyParticipantI’m just curious if it appears the cam will work and then it closes WLM or does it do it immediately upon trying to send/accept? I know you must have uPnP enabled for webcams to work properly with WLM and ideally it should be enabled on both ends or the results can be iffy.
Are you able to view webcam with other messenger programs, and/or did this just start with WLM 8.1 where a previous version of WLM was ok?
Sorry for so many questions, but I too have had some cam issues over the last year and it would be helpful to know the answers.
Doris KenneyParticipantI’ve had individual ones disappear before with the same result when I tried to re-add them, but I’ve not had all of them disappear. I think mine came back when I went in and added a totally new one – after that it seemed to be ok. I was however able to type the keyboard shortcut and have them show up just fine, have you tried that?
You could try doing a repair of your WLM through add/remove programs just to see if that might help. My guess is this will sort itself out just fine if you add a few new ones or try using a few of the shortcuts to get them into an IM.
As I said – not ALL of mine disappeared but I did have a few random ones, and they seemed to truly still be there WLM just wasn’t “seeing” them for some reason when I tried to view all emoticons. I wouldn’t go to any great lengths at this point as I bet it will take care of itself rather quickly.
Let us know how it goes….if they don’t come back maybe a little more research is in order, and I’d be glad to try and help. Good luck!

I’ve tried lots of things to fix it, but I suspect its more likely issues on the WLM server side. I have only 2 suggestions when it happens. I’ve tried both with moderate success.
You can try logging completely out of WLM. Close it down, not just shut it down to the taskbar and reopen it. Sometimes miraculously my contacts have gone offline where they were showing as online previously.
The 2nd option is while you try to continue chatting go to Tools / Options / Connection. Do a refresh, then go to advanced options and do a TCP test (which will invariably say success you can connect to WLM.)
One other thing to consider….when you go to Tools / Options / Connection I’m quite sure it does say you are connected to the internet, but does it say through a uPnP or non-UPnP connection? Ideally, you want UPnP, although for instance at work I am unable to do so. If both connections are not UPnP there can by mysterious problems that crop up. (Although I guess in reality they seem to crop up no matter what – but are worse non-UPnP.)
Good luck! I know how annoying this msg is when it happens.
July 12, 2007 at 11:51 am in reply to: Can I check to see if someone else is logging in using my account? #162694Doris KenneyParticipantNo problem Willo! I agree changing your passwords is probably the best course of action at this point. I’d also suggest a complete virus and spyware scan on the off chance it’s someone other than who you might suspect. Best of luck.
Doris KenneyParticipantWLM Plus allows you to “steal” your friend’s display image. You can then open it in photo editing software and do what you want. If I recall correctly it may save in an odd format, but is easy enough to get open and convert to a standard format. However, the image is small so depending on what you’re trying to do…..it may be tough to get a clear image large enough to work with. Hope that helps.
July 11, 2007 at 8:15 pm in reply to: Can I check to see if someone else is logging in using my account? #162693Doris KenneyParticipantI don’t know of any way to trace the IP of who’s logging in under a particular ID. I have ideas but they are really long shots, and dependent upon several uncontrollable variables.
First, remember, if you have a hotmal email address, this person is likely getting into your emails. You could see if there are any sent mails that you didn’t do. If so – there are probably details on the IP in the properties and you could do a search on that IP address, but that’s only gonna narrow down not give you a particular person. Unless you’re email is NOT hotmail, and you’ve NOT configured to be able to check it from WLM I would strongly recommend immediately changing your password. Now, if it’s not hotmail, and you’ve not configured to check it, and you still want another possible long shot….
Have you set up Windows Live Spaces? If so, that person can also access your spaces page. There is Tracking HTML code available at Hitmapper.com that you can embed (invisibly) on your webpage that will also track the IP of people who visit it and map them. Although, I must say it shows mine as being a bit off from where I really am. However, IF the person accesses it you would likely be able to gain a little info. Once again, remember if they can get to it – they can change it as well with your login info so once again I caution changing it might be the best option. And they may not bother to go there either.
You could also have an alternate ID, add it yourself to the ID you normally use, then login on the alternate one and wait till the person logs in, and try inviting them to chat and see what happens. Perhaps something in what or how they say it will give you a clue. Or if you can get them to email you something you then have their IP but nothing more. If they’re really brave….you could call the computer when they log on and see if they will answer the call…..voice would likely tell the entire story if it’s a friend. But I would assume even the dumbest of hackers wouldn’t be stupid enough to answer a call on someone else’s ID. Never know though.
I’m sure it’s bugging the heck out of you, and you seem less concerned about the security issues surrounding it than just finding out who it is. But if you’re like a lot of people the password for WLM is possibly the same as that you use for other sites and THAT could be of major concern. I wish you luck with finding the answers — but again strongly caution you that changing your password is the safest option, tho it may mean you never find a clue about who is doing it.
Good Luck….and if you find out using one of these ways I’d appreciate knowing which one worked….just fer MY own curiousity.
July 10, 2007 at 5:49 pm in reply to: Can I check to see if someone else is logging in using my account? #162692Doris KenneyParticipantWell, perhaps you can! If you have an alternate login available (easy enough to create if you don’t) you can add yourself (ID you suspect is being used) to the contact list.
If you have WLM Plus installed, and someone uses your account logging in as VISIBLE then you can view the last known logon from the contact information in WLM Plus. Obviously, if the person logs on as INVISIBLE there would be no way to track anything.
This only works if you are logged into the alternate ID when this person logs on. So in essence, you need to have a computer you could leave WLM open on until you find out what you want to know, or find it isn’t being used.
Or, if you have a computer you can leave the ID in question running on, and someone logs in from another computer – a msg window will pop up to that effect. But I’m not really sure if it stays there until you click it or if it just goes away after a certain time. I’m thinking it stays until you close it. Then you’d also know someone else logged in but not the time just that it happened.
Good luck figuring it out!
Doris KenneyParticipantI’m just curious what version of Windows you are both using? I’ve read that with Vista there are issues and the sharing folders simply won’t work and crash WLM. If this is a “temp” fix for Vista it might be worth trying…..anyway just curious. I’ve also tried the photo sharing with Vista and found it crashes me….anyone else had that??
Thanks,
DorisDoris KenneyParticipantI know sometimes after I do a disk cleanup I’ve lost display images. And sometimes, when a user logs in, it does not seem to recognize it. Typically if I right click on the “missing” display pic and view contact card, it magically materializes. I also use WLM Plus and sometimes clicking on contact information will make it appear when it’s being really difficult. I assume you’ve checked your settings to be sure you’ve enabled viewing display pics in your options?? Under tools / options / general / displaying my contacts. Good luck with it I’m sure it’s a major hassle right now – I know I’d be really upset if I couldn’t see pic when I was chatting.
Doris KenneyParticipantStill down as of 11:10 am EST. Interesting I get no errors it can’t connect to the server. It just goes from “Signing in” back to the main Sign In screen with the 3 tick boxes. Oh well….perhaps this indicates upgrades and the Vista voice conference version is coming soon??? I can cross my fingers and hope right?!!!
