If Firefox thinks it is the default browser, exit Firefox completely.
Go to “Start Menu -> Run” and enter this into the text box:
firefox.exe -silent -setDefaultBrowser

If I get an error message when trying to log into msn, and it is persistant i.e all night or over a few days, then I use Meebo until the problem is fixed.
Have you tried using that? Might be worth it in the short term.

If you have no way of connecting to your alternative email, then I don’t think there is much you can do other than set up a new email account.
