So I guess in the end, it all comes down to how your ears have adapted over your life span. Apparently Vanessa couldn’t hear it, and then there is Jeff (over 30) who also couldn’t. And then there is proof as Soccer’s teacher couldn’t. There is obviously some sort of scientific reasoning behind it, but like I said before, perhaps CBS used a frequency that they wanted all readers to hear.

January 14, 2007 at 9:35 am #156191EEDOKMemberI’m 21 and that sound is painful
January 14, 2007 at 2:28 pm #156200amy_d_gParticipantI’m 26 and I can’t hear a thing…
January 15, 2007 at 6:26 am #156196RabidKittenParticipantThat’s the sound the TV makes. *rubs her head* That’s the reason I don’t watch much TV, it makes that squeeling sound and makes my head hurt. My roomates thought I was full of it when I walked into the house and said “Ouch, the TV upstairs is on” They went upstairs, the TV was on a black screen and I said “No, really, it’s on, I can hear it” They said “Nu uh” Pushed the power button and it flashed off and the buzzing went away.
I was happy.
But yes, ehm, here I just had two 20 year olds, a 22 year old and a 29 year old all say they could hear it. But JL (29) had to come right up to the laptop to heard.
Go Fig.

January 31, 2007 at 6:09 am #156193TigerbladeParticipantspeaking of the tv sound… all through high school, i could tell exactly which televisions were on in which classrooms. i’d be walking down the hall to third-period science with my friends, and i’d say something to the effect of “sounds like we’re watching a movie in science today.”
of course i’d get weird looks from the others… but lo and behold, we’d get to the class and teacher tells us it’s video day today. that sound is everywhere.
January 31, 2007 at 9:17 pm #156205MrEggsaladParticipantA TV is exactly what it sounds like! It bugs me so much, especially when it seems I’m like the only one who notices it.
February 1, 2007 at 11:32 pm #156197Dr KimbleParticipantOh my, that’s pretty cool. I played it numerous times and I couldn’t hear anything. Then, I tried it on my brother..he knew exactly when I pushed play and when it stopped. What the? I am 22 and he is 27 >__<
He says it is a continuos horrible sound. Oh well, I guess it is better that I cannot hear it :p
February 2, 2007 at 10:46 pm #156190OreoMemberThere used to be a store at the mall that must have had something like this…I used to HATE going in there when I was little and my mother could never hear the sound….there’s a movie out now about something like that and the commercial has the sound…I FREAKING HATE when the trailer/commercial comes on…my cats do not seem to appreciate at it much either.
February 3, 2007 at 4:33 am #156204gossipingraeMembersam, a tv on mute is exactly what it sounds like. and it also sounds like when i have the tv on AUX/TV (i think that what it is) to watch a dvd. i heard it perfectly fine. if i was standing in the back of a room i might not hear it.
this is quite annoying for a ringtone to send and receive in class text messages. if you’re gonna cheat, put it on vibrate! 🙂
April 8, 2007 at 3:28 pm #156215den44057Memberi just played it and i cant hear anything. i cant believe the kids can really hear it. this is crazy! well i guess after 5 kids yelling all the time i could be going deaf!!

May 8, 2008 at 3:35 am #156208MrOatsMember“The Authorities” at my High School just “discovered” this.
They told the teachers, to tell students, that: “Any student who has a cell phone in school must turn their cell phone off/NOT use the popular ‘high pitched’ ring tone. The frequency of this ring tone can give some students moderate to severe headaches or possibly seizures. Although a threat to adult teachers and staff does not exist, a threat to the students and interference with the students learning is present. Any student to be found using this ring tone will face consequences.”
May 8, 2008 at 4:01 am #156194TigerbladeParticipantGah! I must be getting old… I can’t hear that frequency anymore.
I know when this was originally posted I could hear it in all it’s screeching glory, but now… no more. *cries in the corner*
