The newest version of Messenger Plus is .74.
Anyway, the only way you will see a status renamed is in the contact list. You won’t see it in a conversation window, nor ‘send an instant message’ window.

This is the only way I know of doing this. Also, your contact doesn’t have to have Plus to see the status either.
