ParticipantOver the past month, I’ve been getting almost daily phone calls to my cell from a spoofed phone number “0000000000.” Many companies apparently spoof their number to show this, example Blockbuster. Not MY local blockbuster however, but some.
Anyways, I haven’t had the chance to answer any of these as they usually call while I’m working or driving and they never leave a voice mail. They again called me last week, and I finally got the chance to pick up the call….
As soon as I said hello, I get a prerecorded message from “the captain” wanting me to have two free-cruise tickets to the Bahamas. Uh huh.. whatever.
Alright, so I’m already pissed cause they are calling my cell number (which no one has publicly) and I’m on Canada’s brand spanking new DNCL (intro’d on Oct 1 08). So, before the telemarketing gets started, they want my opinion on a short 10 question survey. They want me to press 1 or 2 to answer the questions. mmmk, so I pressed 0. And it thanked me! So I pressed 0 for the following 9 until I finally got the guy on the phone to explain how lucky I was to win this “awesome prize”…
After the man identified himself, I told him straight up, “lose my number or be sued.”
He replied with asking me if I wanted to rephrase my question. …..?! seriously?I asked him if I wasn’t clear. He then told me, he would only do so if I asked nicely. WHAAAA? Are you serious? The man refused to remove my number unless I asked nicely? Do these people actually enjoy provoking people who are already pissed off? I told the man I wouldn’t repeat my self. Do as I said, or I would be submitting my complaint through my lawyer to the CRTC (the folks who are regulating complaints about people getting telemarketing calls who are on ‘the list’).
The man responded, go ahead and complain to them, and while I was at it, complain to the FBI and a bunch of others who I didn’t specifically listen to at the time. He told me they weren’t telemarketers. By this point, this confirmed to me this company was based out of the USA and I hung up.
I then searched Google for 0000000000 telemarketing calls, and found several “who called me from” websites (who had countless pages of complaints in the last MONTH) about this specific telemarketer catching people from all over Canada. Some of these people who were called, actually placed their name into a draw for a free vacation while at conventions etc, so I can understand why they were called… funny how hundreds of different people “won” the grand prize… but then there are people like my self, who have only my cell number listed on my website (which isn’t picked up by Google yet), my WLM for txt msging and my Facebook page — who is only visible to my Friends — meaning people who are in my Networks cannot even view my profile unless they add me. Where did they get my number? I started reading more pages on this website, and these people are even calling UNDER AGE children on their cells asking for them specifically! I mean honestly! Are they looking into Myspace and Facebook pages or something here? Have cell phone numbers become listed on whitepages or 411.com?
I looked further, until I found their 1-800 call back number. So I called it. Another person who answered asked me if I wanted the cruise tickets… get bent… I just want my number removed. He told me OK and hung up. Right, he hung up before I even gave him the number. What a tool. I called him from an unblocked number!
I called back a third time, and when the female answered, I politely asked for their call center’s mailing address. She asked me to hold, and came back two-minutes later asking me why I wanted corporate office’s address… I told her since your moron co-workers don’t know how to do a simple task without provocation, perhaps something in writing would be sufficient. .. actually I wanted it so my lawyer could write them a cease and desist letter. Plus, I didn’t mention head office, I correctly said call center. Trying to trick me, eh!
She was really nice, and said to me all I had to do was ask and she would remove the number…. O RLY?! I gave in, cause she was nice and gave her my number. She then told me I wasn’t in her system. Nor was my name.
She then told me, if I get another call to ignore it because if I pick up, or call back (from an unblocked number) their auto-dialer picks up my number and puts me back on their calling list. The removal can take 48 hours to purge. Did that first asshole remove the number? Who knows…. but I haven’t gotten a call back yet.
This company is dumb. Straight up. I know, that specific organizations etc, are exempt from the DNCL (at least here in Canada). One of them being, survey companies, where they are only calling for your opinion. These companies aren’t pushy, they are not selling anything. However, I guess this company thinks they can get around the rules by asking you to answer 10 survey questions before they “sell” you the “free” cruise.
Either way, I’ve sent a complaint to the CRTC here in Canada about them and opted for a response to my claim. Anyone else in Canada get the same call I urge for the same thing. Below is the information I’ve collected about the company.

I’m not saying this company is a scam, because it’s headed by Ramada Hotels, and there is actually a cruise liner, you can check out Imperial Majesty Cruise Line on Wikipedia. However, I’ve also read people who actually did sign up were refused refunds. Please note that Florida state law requires companies to comply with a 30-day money back policy. You CAN get your money back without canceling or generating a dispute with your VISA/Mastercard company! The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (1-800-435-7352) gives the consumer some protection in the matter of cancellations, by providing that a contract for a vacation certificate may be canceled in writing within 30 days of purchase.
Keep in mind with regard to cancellations: the entire amount involved is refundable. Unethical sellers of travel may offer to refund all but a certain amount, but they are required to refund the full amount paid to the seller of travel, if the consumer cancels the vacation package, in writing and returns the vacation package, within 30 days of purchase or receipt of the vacation package. — Protect Your Travel Investment – Division of Consumer Services, DOACS
Be aware, if you try to call and cancel, they may attempt to tell you it’s non-refundable. Just quote the state law, and you’ll be laughing!

ParticipantAnd speak of the devil, I just ended a call with one. My credit card company just called me to offer me identity theft protection for only $6.99/month. What pissed me off, was after he asked me how I was, for 2.5 minutes he just kept talking and talking and totally bored me, so I hung up.
With me, I involve the customer right away so that it’s not always me asking questions and I don’t have anyone hang up on me because they get bored with talking. Geez I hate that! :p

ParticipantI had this problem before however i used modem spy to record and log all telephone calls from call centres and thats when you can have real fun.
You see by recording them you can put them up on a website and expose the person for making unwanted calls. They cant do anything since they are calling numbers up who do not wish for any communication from them.
Get the program here
Record Phone Calls to MP3 – Modem Spy
You will need a 56 k modem and the normal telephone cord to record them.

ParticipantFirst off, I should state that I never get telemarketing calls to my phone, since I listed my cell (my only phone, as I don’t have a landline) on the federal no-call list. However, occasionally I’ll be at my parents’ house when they get a call.
I don’t usually get mad, I just hang up. The moment it begins to sound like a telemarketer, I hang up. I don’t yell at them, I don’t even say something to the effect of “I’m not interested.” I just hang up. It’s simple, effective, and quick.
I understand it’s not the fault of the person calling — they’re just doing their job. They just picked (as have you, apparently) a job that puts them in the position of not being liked by a majority of the populace. On the rare occasion that I do allow the person to go a few sentences into their spiel, if they start getting pushy, then again it’s an immediate hang up.

MemberHey there.. I haven’t gotten any unwanted solicitor calls for a very long time. I registered us on the National Do Not Call Registry. https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx
One in awhile our cable or phone company will call to ask us if we want to upgrade, so I don’t think it applies to businesses you are already doing business with? I’m too lazy to read the fine print. I just know my phone isn’t ringing 😉

ParticipantCurious, if you’re listed on this “Do Not Call” list, what exactly does the message give you when you call?
I’ve had multiple calls say “The person you are trying to call is not accepting calls at this time. Please try again later.”… is it something like that?
And I wonder why we’re listed on it -_-
March 29, 2007 at 4:36 am #159480Tigerblade
ParticipantTo the best of my knowledge, the Do Not Call list just prevents companies from calling you, and provides a pretty strong basis for legal action if a company does call. I don’t know if calling someone who’s put themselves on the list will get you a message… I don’t work for a company that calls people.
But, so far it’s worked. I’ve been on the list more or less since it was introduced, and I can’t recall ever getting a solicitation on my phone. The only “soliciting” calls I’ve ever received were from companies I was dumb enough to give my number (like a comedy club where I entered a raffle).
