This method always worked for me.
yeah but that leaves a blink space … I did at one point had this way that altered the buddy list so that blank space wasn’t tehre
The program Dead AIM will remove the Ad and the ad space. Also, AIMutation will do the same http://www.aimutation.com don’t remember the web address for Dead Aim.

The only patch I know of leaves the blank space. I have been very pleased with AIMutation; you might consider giving it a try (it’s free). DeadAIM gives you even more control, as you can eliminate other parts you don’t need like the stock ticker.
Actually Jeff, you don’t need any additional software to eliminate the stock ticker. It can be removed by going toPreferences>Stock Ticker and uncheck the box that says “Show stock ticker in buddy window”
This patch I had at one point, took the ad away, then you know how there is that blank gray space, well it even replaced that.
