MemberHi I’ve came to this board because I think this is probably the best help I can get.
basically my AIM problem been existing for a few months now and it’s really starting to get annoying. My aim problem is I would have IM conversation and my AIM does this wierd thing of freezing or disconnecting. I dont know how to put it in exact terms, but my AIM would slow down, and I would type IMs to people normally. then i would find out they didnt recieve my messages and I didnt recieve their’s. however, I would type and enter messages to them without knowing they didnt get them and that theyve been sending messages to me. every time i look in AIM profiles when this problem happens it would say “Please wait…” for the longest time. I click on the eyeball to become Invisible, nothing happens, the eye stays opens and does not close. this is really annoying, i cant have good AIM conversation as this very often sometimes. i know ive froze/disconnect when I look in peoples profiles and it says Please Wait for a long time or I cant become invisible.
im running AIM 5.5.3595 and DeadAim 4.5
ive tried uninstalling DeadAIM but the problem still occurs on my regular AIM 5.5, ive tried installing 6.0 and using that, but the problem still persists. i thought maybe it’s my internet connection being choppy, but i surf internet fine and stream internet radio fine when this occurs.
I’ve done AIMFix and X-Cleaner to do that clean the Layer thing.
please help, thanks in advance.

MemberNext time this happens, look at the computer’s clock on the bottom right of the system tray and remember it. Now go to START>run and type eventvwr and hit enter. Click on ‘System’ on the left-hand side, and then sort by date. Remembering the time that AIM started having problems, scroll to the right side in event viewer and look for event numbers that are 4226 within a few hours of AIM freezing/disconnecting.

Memberyeah i did that. it happened JUST a few mins ago. it just happened on 3:33pm on 2/22/07
last 4226 error is on 2/21/07 11:10:33. there was another one prior to that on the 2/21/07 10:10:03PM. i provided a screen shot for more information if neccessary

i hope this information works. do you have an idea of what’s wrong ? is this problem common or is it rare ?
February 23, 2007 at 4:11 am #158506Jon8RFC
MemberWith XP Service Pack 2 and later, it’s common with many internet-dependent programs since connections are limited. Since there wasn’t a 4226 at the time of AIM having the problem, I don’t think that it’s related.
Are you using a wireless connection? If you have a router, please post what brand and model number it is.
It’s tough to say what’s going on since streaming seems to work, but with streaming there’s always a buffer incase the connection slows or is dropped. I’m wondering if your router and/or wireless connection sees the AIM connection as stale for whatever reason, so it drops it. Once I have your router brand and model, I might be able to find out something more definitive.

Memberim not using wireless service although my router is also wireless. im using a Westell VersaLink model 327W.

MemberI have the Westell 327 also. I put the Westellmodem in bridge mode and now use a Linksys router to do everything else.
I had the same problem with AIM disconnecting and reconnecting and found it it was the modem that was doing it.
Look in the back of the modem and see if it is Made in the USA or China because the ones in China have a history of overheating which will restart the modem and kill the aim connection.

MemberThere seem to be a number of different revisions for that model number, so I can’t tell you anything specific yet. If you can take a peek on the bottom of it, you should see something starting with A90-327W, B90-327W, C90-327W, or D90-327W.
If you want to try updating the firmware right away (which might not work, since web-based update info is often outdated), you can check out this:
http://westell.com/content/products/pdf/030_300444A.pdf
And do a ctrl+f (for find) and type in “firmware” and the first hit will put you at the right spot for updating, which may or may not be identical to yours, since the pdf is for a specific revision of the part.If you want to avoid me as the middleman entirely, you could call up tech support for your ISP, tell them your specific issue, and that you would like to update the firmware to see if it will help. I’m definitely ready to continue the hunt for you though, if you can toss me the a/b/c/d90 number I mentioned above.

Memberyes mine is made in china. 619a-W327Wxx6. im gonna try that link. sorry i cant seem to really understand the information, how do i exactly go about downloading the firmware ?
February 25, 2007 at 11:28 am #158508Jon8RFC
MemberI’m needing a different number than what you posted above…check out this image, where the arrow points at what I’m needing:
http://dsnimg.dell.com/images/external/images/Network/Westell%20Label.jpgAfter doing more hunting, I’m finding some info on updating the firmware. All of the different hardware use different firmware, so we need to make sure we match them up properly.

Memberi gotcha. mine is A90-327W15-06, its actually the same number as the one in the photo. so assuming i get the firmware update, does this fix my AIM problem for sure ? or is it just a hunch ?
i think i updated the firmware. ive found this, look at the very bottom. do you think i went about the right way of downloading the firmware ?

MemberI was looking at that exact page when I snagged the image. That’s pretty handy that yours is exactly the same as the one on the Dell page. If you hop into the router configuration/setup page and check the software version, does it display 03.02.01 in the spot referenced in Figure2 on that page?
I tried to find out some information on that firmware version, but couldn’t find what I was looking for. Now that I know your exact model, I’m going to do some more hunting incase there’s a more recent version.
I can’t guarantee a fix, but your issue is one of the reasons that firmware updates are released…so it might help out. I read elsewhere on similar router models that a firmware update fixed connection issues, so we’ll just have to wait and see how it turns out for you.

MemberGrr…I called tech support and got an outsourced person on the phone that read straight from a script and wouldn’t tell me what the latest firmware version is.
He finally offered me a website, Verzion Online , and he used the phrase “this will automatically update your software”, but I’m thinking that he didn’t understand what I was asking for.
Yesterday, I found Westell VersaLink Downloads which allows you to put in your serial number of your hardware and it claims to check if it needs an update…but as I mentioned in a previous post, these online update checks are frequently out-dated. I grabbed that link from here: https://www.westell.com/content/verizon/instructions.pdf
If you want to give tech support a whirl, you might have better luck since he kept asking for a DSL phone number. 1-800-567-6789
You just need to be stern and request the latest firmware version number and shrug off their scripting to “do a line test” and nearly everything else they say. He even went so far to say “if you are able to connect to the internet, then NO programs should have a problem”–just hold your ground and insist that you be offered the version number of the latest firmware update for your hardware.March 1, 2007 at 2:03 am #158517Dontot
Memberthanks for all your help and i did upgrade my firmware to 03.02.01 . too bad my problem is still existent, i guess we reach the end of the road. im going to try find out the latest firmware, but i do think its 03.02.01 for my model. i think it might be some spyware that is affecting my computer or something along those lines, i really have no clue why my AIM has this problem. thanks for all the help though, i really appreciate it Jon8RFC.

MemberYou’re very welcome 🙂 I just wish that firmware update would’ve solved the problem.
You’ve run AIMFix, run X-Cleaner for the LSP setting (good move there, by the way), tried AIM6, updated router firmware, and it’s not a 4226 issue…that’s pretty thorough. Having AIM freeze on you, without knowing it, then noticing by the timed-out profiles has happened to me in the past, but it cleared up after a few days at the most.
Maybe you’re falling victim to a brand new exploit, or an accidental use of that exploit. Try changing your privacy settings to allow only those on your buddy list to contact you and see if it happens. If it still occurs, then we can take it one step further to see if someone on your buddy list is (unknowingly) causing this to happen, by using a different program to log chats and then I can look at the html markup.
If that’s still a no-go, then maybe we can use a packet logger/sniffer and I’ll do my best to filter through the raw data to see if there’s an IM being sent that doesn’t even get to the logger. I really think that the alternate logger will show the bad characters or markup causing the problem, if that is the problem…so a packet sniffer might just lead us no place.

Memberi’ve notice when I IM some people and their away messages try to respond, I freeze. that’s just something i kinda noticed, I think there’s some compaitibility issues with my AIM and users with 6.0 i’m not sure. but yes, how can we do the packet logger/sniffer ?
and now this problem is really getting me mad because i did a system restore to 12/15/06. that day i reformatted my computer and i still get this problem. do you think its a possbile spyware/virus ? i use zonelabs security suite and i scan once in a while and it doesnt seem to pick up anything big.
