MemberI am new to this forum, but I am hoping you can help…. I am running AIM 5.9.3690 on both my Desktop and my wifes which are networked through our Linksys WRT54GX Router, we have DSL through Verizon.. It seems that after a couple of hours both of our AIMs seem to freeze.. Both machines run Windows XP Professional, with 4GB of RAM… I have checked the Event viewer and I don’t think that there is anything corresponding to this, but am pretty stumped as I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling… Would like to keep this version as I need webcam and do not want AIM Today which doesn’t seem to be able to be deactivated in later versions… Thanks for any help you can provide…

MemberSwitch to a older version of AIM, if that doesnt work, then get a thirtd party messenger, i prefer Trillian.

MemberIf you download the newest version of AIM and AIM Ad hack (google for it) you can disable the today window and several other things you don’t really need.

MemberI tried both suggestions and am still running into the same problem on both machines. AIM Ad Hack is great and I am a fan of it with the latest version, but I can’t seem to get it to run with the latest version for any length of time on either machine. I haven’t been able to pinpoint or identify what is causing the freezes or catch it happening. Could it be related to the router? Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks…

MemberAre you using middle_man?
July 27, 2005 at 3:40 am #126541Larry317
MemberI am not using middle_man, but will definitely install it on both machines.. Since, both machines are having the same problem, freezing after a few hours, is it beneficial or even necessary to install on both? Also, will the middle_man log be effective if I am not receiving an IM when it freezes. Lastly, what should I do with the log once the freeze occurs again. Thanks for everyones help…

MemberOh, no no no…you don’t need to install it, sorry. I was curious if you already were, because a previous version of middle_man used to cause intermittent freezing of AIM, and I was going to suggest updating, but there is no need since that isn’t the problem 🙂
And if you were referring to my post about “bunk characters”, that couldn’t be the problem since you’re on 5.9, and I don’t know of any html exploits on 5.9.
I’m trying to think of a situation that would cause AIM to lock up after several hours, but I can’t think of anything other than an old middle_man version. Do you use screen savers or auto-standby on either machine? Has there ever been an instance where one AIM client was locked up, but the other wasn’t, and was the screen saver/standby not running on the non-frozed AIM client?

MemberJon8RFC thanks for your help!!! There doesn’t seem to be a true common thread other than the machines a very similarly built. Neither one of us uses standby mode or hibernation. My wife runs a screensaver, I don’t. I have noticed situations where one AIM will be frozen and the other is not, but typically it seems that it is just a matter of time before the other machine eventually locks up. It is not something that you really catch.. It almost seems to happen more when we are away from the computer I would say then when we are working on it. I don’t know if this helps or not. The computers are networked, as well as accessing the internet, through a linksys WRT54GX Router with my wife’s computer actually obtaining it’s network access through the WET54GS5 network bridge. I am not using any application restrictions or parentals so I don’t think these are interfering, but given that this is a common problem on both machines, I am beginning to think my problem might be there.

MemberI’m really stumped, because if the wireless connection was flaking out, AIM should just get disconnected. I really doubt the following is the cause, because I haven’t heard of AIM freezing, just disconnecting; in the event viewer in the system section, are there recent 4226 events?
I’m almost tempted to say “update AIM”, but I really dislike that phrase and think this issue could be fixed alternatively. That might be a last resort though, and it just might fix it…let’s look for fairly recent 4226 events though, sometime prior to the last freeze of AIM.
EDIT: I forgot to add that I looked into recent and past firmware updates for the router and bridge, but didn’t see any fixed issues that could’ve been part of the problem.

MemberI did not find any 4226 events, but I may have possibly resolved the issue on one machine…. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling my AOL 9.0 SE , the result is that the AIM did not appear to freeze, but now the AOL is acting weird… So something is going on between the two…. Will post again if I come up with some sort of resolution… But as far as I can tell, AOL may have been the culprit at least on one…

MemberI have been having the same problem with my AIM for a few months now. It will freeze after being logged on for some time whether or not I am at the computer. I had to switch to trillian, but would really prefer to use AIM again. I found a lot of 4226 events on my computer…what does that mean? I’ve tried uninstalling and installing AIM and I’ve tried using older versions but nothing will stop AIM from freezing.

MemberWell, the 4226 events were a possibility in my mind, but they shouldn’t cause AIM to freeze. I wasn’t very confident in 4226 being related, but it was the last possible thing I could think of to try and figure out Larry’s situation. Since he didn’t find any, I’ve decided that it isn’t a factor.
4226 events mean that your computer is attempting too many concurrent in/outbound connections, but that would only cause AIM to be disconnected just like if the internet connection went out…freezing isn’t very likely. Again, it was my last resort for troubleshooting his issue. I’m thinking there is a software conflict somewhere, but I don’t know where since I don’t have personal access to the computer(s).
August 6, 2005 at 2:32 pm #126544Larry317
MemberIt appeared that the conflict was related to some sort of interaction with AOL, the AOL toolbar 2.0, and AIM. I actually tried uninstalling and then reinstalling all three. This appeared to resolve the problem for a short period of time, but it came back after 2 days. I am now starting to think that perhaps it has something to with the router as I have seen numerous references to people having issues with AIM and linksys routers. I am using the WRT54GX router with the WET54GS5 bridge. My computer connects directly to the router while my wife’s is connected through the bridge. Last evening I tried port forwarding with AIM 5.9.3857 (w/o addins) for my computer and so far I am connected. I am just not sure how I would also open a port for my wife as well under these circumstances. Any help or suggestions would be greatly be appreciated… Thanks..

MemberI can’t think of a way to open a port for multiple IPs, since I’ve never seen an option. I know there’s the DMZ option, but that isn’t a good idea unless you have something like Zone Alarm for the software firewall on the DMZ computer…you could then forward the port to the other computer. That’s up to you, but I don’t recommend doing so unless you use Zone Alarm for the DMZ computer, and even then I’m hesitant to say “do it!”.
