Try my RX-Plugin for AIM 6.0. It has a feature called “Idle Lock” that lets you instantly appear as being idle at the press a hot-key. You can then continue to work at your PC (even send IM’s to other buddies) while you appear as idle on AIM.

Here is a screen shot of the settings page for the Idle Lock feature in Gus Verdun’s RX-Plugin. This plug-in works with AIM 6.0 and AIM Lite.
