ModeratorYes, I experienced the same thing myself a few minutes ago. It seems to appear just under the contact’s display pic, just as you described. A mysterious white square. Hmmm…are we being probed by aliens, intent on discovering what all this WLM is about?

Participantyes, Philip, it is THAT square
I saw it again (boohoo o_O) on the same contact, it appeared and then dissapeared few timesedit – does ur contact use wlm 8.5 as you ?

ModeratorYes, it seems to occur only on WLM8.1 and 8.5, as far as I know. In WLM 9.0 Beta, it appears as the Office 2007 icon. I wouldn’t be too worked up about it; we’ll see what happens tomorrow.

ParticipantROFL….Mine’s been doing it for several days now with most of my contacts. I clicked on it (just because I could) but nothing happens. Very mysterious indeed!!

ParticipantI’ve discovered the answer! According the guru Jonathan Kay – there is a Microsoft server issue today (at least 2 days by my count) and this box would normally be used to show the contact is using Office Communicator. When they fix the server problem it will go away.
If they’re having server issues I guess that explains why when I log on invisible, then go online, I get a pop-up a few minutes later saying I’m still invisible when I’m clearly not!
Anyway – no worries with your WLM if you’re seeing this. There is nothing wrong with your installation, you are not missing seeing anything, and it will go away soon.

ModeratorThanks for sharing this with us, Doris. And I thought we were heading for Area 51.
The Messenger Team blog has confirmed that this is a bug. Hopefully it will be fixed soon.

Participantthanks a lot patndoris and Philip for info
by the way … what is the Office Communicator ? a feature of new 9 wlm ?

ModeratorHere’s Microsoft’s definition of Office Communicator:
Office Communicator 2007 is a unified communications client that helps people be more productive by enabling them to communicate easily with others in different locations or time zones using a range of different communication options, including instant messaging (IM), voice, and video. Integration with programs across the 2007 Microsoft Office system — including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Groove, and SharePoint Server — gives information workers many different ways to communicate with each other via a consistent and simple user experience.
More info is available at the Communicator website. Apparently WLM 9 will incorporate Communicator into it.

ParticipantAfter a night of statuses going wacky, weird pop-ups about being offline when I wasn’t, IM’s not making it thru to me and being signed on and off of WLM – things seem to have settled back down. And the mysterious box, which I had on virtually all my contacts for about 48 hours, is gone.
Let’s hope they’ve got it all fixed!
