MemberDear Sirs,
for 3 days now i cant login to my YM, i’d click Login, YM would sit there for a while (sometimes more than a minute) and would not login – reinstalled YM several times (deleted its folder in program files, deleted all entries of YM in the registry) i even installed YM9beta just to be sure. got the same result. this used to work for me whenever i have problems with YM.
Also, ive noticed – before when i fresh installed YM (deleted folder, deleted registry entries) i got a window from YTK Pro prompting for the new YM exe file. but since i got this problem (a couple of days ago) there is no prompt. do you think it might be an issue with my windows xp? that’s why i’m contemplating on reformating my PC. i’ll get to reformatting when i’ve exhausted all possible fix.
my ID does login to Yahoo mail, Yahoo Groups, web messenger and even yahoo mobile with no prob. it logs in on other chat clients just fine. i have tried different yahoo IDs – number IDs, 4 chars, undys, y7mail accounts with no success on messy. i have requested a new password from yahoo for my main ID but still got the same result.
i think something got screwed on my registry. i used to have a THE SYSTEM JUST RECOVERED FROM A CRITICAL ERROR, when i hang because of a faulty software. and i haven’t noticed it since i got this prob. YM would send a packet to yahoo and not get anything back. when i use it with YTK Pro, i can see it thru its event logger – YM would just sit there for a whole minute without getting anything back from yahoo – i use a bandwidth monitor and not a packet coming in. not as before – i can readily tell just by watching the bandwidth monitor if YM is about to login.
this one is funny – when i do a system restore – and have just reinstalled YM – i get this multiple instances of Yahoo folders in the program files folder named Yahoo, Yahoo (2), Yahoo (2)(2), Yahoo (3)… depending maybe on how much i’ve reinstalled YM before doing a system restore rollback. and it’s not just on YM, i saw another instance on another program (having multiple instances of its folder on the program files – its driving me nuts.
I’m using Antivir, have tried without an A/V (completely uninstalled it) with the same result. disabled firewall, deleted cookies and temp files in Internet Options even. have used registry mechanic after every uninstall, deleted YM entries in the Registry. please help – im stumped on this one

ParticipantHello and welcome to BBB! I understand your frustration. Yahoo Messenger has been highly sensitive to viruses and malware lately and this has caused a large number of users to have problems logging in.
Before you go to drastic lengths (like a reformat) or more installs/uninstalls, run a complete virus scan with up to date definitions, and 2 separate full spyware scans with different programs. I recommend Ad-Aware and SuperAnti Spyware which can both be downloaded from Filehippo (just be sure to get the latest definitions before scanning.)
If you still feel you need a fresh install I’d suggest using Revo Uninstaller to uninstall your current version. It scans before and after uninstall (during which it attempts to use the standard uninstall program for whatever you’re getting rid of) and then alerts you to any remaning files, folders, and registry entries that are left over after the standard uninstall and gives you the option to remove them. No program gets 100% but this one does a pretty darn good job at finding things. Then you could try a fresh install again. But I wouldn’t do this until after you complete the virus and spyware scans.
Let me know if either of these helps.

MemberDoris,
thanks for hooking me up with Revo – its great. scanned for virus and spyware and it came out clean. i used Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware together with Avira Antivir. i finally got my YM working, but i’m getting this runtime error everytime i enter into a chatroom. it doesn’t bug me much – but an error is still an error. i noticed i have multiple instance of java installed in my computer – where it should have uninstalled previous versions of itself. how do i go about this one? or should i just leave it as is? i’m pretty sure this is what’s making the error. i’ve attached some screen shots. I’m using YTK Pro with my YM. you’re a heaven-sent Doris :).

ParticipantHaving multiple instances of Java in your add/remove programs really isn’t a problem. It doesn’t uninstall the previous versions and if I remember correctly will retain at least 3 of the previous versions. That said, I say it’s safe to uninstall the Java 5 one. Just keep the 2 Java 6 ones (just in case you ever need to roll back.)
As for the run time error. I don’t know much about them, but I’d suspect that either uninstalling your Java completely and reinstalling fresh or an update to your Flash will take care of those. You may want to wait for another opinion before you run off and do that tho – there may be an easier better way.
Glad your YM is working again! It’s better than nothing eh?

MemberHmmm, do you ever clean out the registry?

MemberDoris,
i ran a number of chat clients, but i feel blind without my YM and YTK Pro. i’ll check out if my Flash is updated. thanks…
Venom,
glad to see you here. I use Registry Mechanic regularly, and after every install/uninstall.

ParticipantYou should never overuse them programs, they are a recipe for disaster
They should only be used every now and then
And even then they are known to remove needed entries
Why most give caution and offer a backup function.

Memberthanks for the tip Dermot, but i think my YM finally caved in. my YM 8.1.421 would immediately crash after opening it.
i’ve tried almost everything, everything that i know at least.
1 – uninstalled YM; deleted its folder; deleted its entries in the registry; reinstalled it >>> got the same result.
2 – used REVO Uninstaller, deleted its entries in the registry, deleted entries in the yahoo folder. ; reinstalled YM >>> same result.
3 – installed ym9 beta >>> same result.
4 – uninstalled one of the three Java intances >>. same result
5 – cleared cookies, cache, files in INternet options ; unchecked the use 3rd party plug-ins.i’d get these error messages:
YahooMessenger.exe – Application Error
– the instruction at “0x00712ef7” referenced memory at “0x01292008”. the Memory could not ne “read”.
– the instruction at “0x007125f6” referenced memory at “0x01292008”. the Memory could not ne “read”.
Click OK to terminate the programMay 19, 2008 at 11:00 pm #167849Doris Kenney
ParticipantAccording to this Techspot forum, memory read errors can be caused by a number of things including (but not limited to):
Instruction cannot be read errors can be caused by bad memory, faulty CPU, bad drivers, hardware conflicts, crappy programming, and fluke luck (to name a few causes.)
A number of other forums seem to strongly indicate it can be caused by malware. I know you said your scans came out clean, but that in and of itself troubles me. If you spend any time on the internet at all you’re going to get spyware. Unless your system is so locked down nothing can get on (in which case your browsing experience would be impacted) these programs should be finding something on there.
I really suggest grabbing SuperAntiSpyware from Filehippo, update the definitions and run a full scan of your system with your browser closed. Allow it to remove anything you find. I’d also suggest a HijackThis log. You can download this from Filehippo as well. Run the scan with your browser closed and if you are unfamiliar with reading them, you can copy and past the results into PM’s to me (please do not send attachments) and I’ll gladly take a look at them for you and see if anything jumps out. (It can take 2 or more PM’s as the results are lengthy.)
While these errors can be caused, obviously, but any number of things – I’m still leaning towards malware or a hijacker of some sort given the number of people who’ve had that type of problem lately.
I’ll wait to hear if you choose to try these or not. If you do, please post the results back.

MemberDoris,
i’ll try your suggestions when i get back home. i’ve noticed that my system isn’t as responsive as before. even a simple task as opening the task manager is a tad slow.
i’ve scan with ad-aware and found one trojan dropper, i feel it isn’t the last of it, so i’ll try SuperAnti-Spyware.
this happened after a friend and i tried Teamviewer ( a remote PC software), the session lasted less than an hour, got disconected from NET, and after that, all these strange prob come popping in. my Antivir won’t update anymore, so does my Spybot Search and destroy. I have to manually DL an update for Antivir. most of the programs in my PC with auto-update doesn’t work anymore – save for Ad-aware.
seems like something is blocking these progs from updating. i even enabled DEP just to be sure, if at least there are malwares in my PC.
i’ll get back with the Hijack This report/log, thanks Doris – you’re really a helping hand.
