With virtually no fanfare AOL has begun testing version 5.0 of their popular AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) for Windows. The most noticeable new feature in AIM 5.0 is called AIM Expressions. The new AIM Expressions allow you to skin the AIM interface similar to Yahoo! Messengers IMvironments.
The initial AIM Expressions include three “generic” skins (Patriotic, Red Rose and Skull), and one commercial skin (Eight Legged Freaks).

Also new are Content Panels. These reminded me of the tabs already available in both MSN and Yahoo, with news and other content available in the same area that your buddy list is normally displayed.

AIM 5.0 also has a typing indicator (finally!) that lets you see when your buddy is typing a reply.
There are hints of other features found on in the preferences section, including Sound Sets, Smiley Sets and Display Sets. Looks like an opportunity for people to customize AIM to their hearts content.
Cant wait for the final release? Get the AIM 5.0 beta here!
