KeymasterWell, we’ve been waiting for true interoperability for a long time, and now Apple and AOL have delivered in iChat. Unlike Trillian, Jabber, Odigo and other alternative instant messengers, iChat lets registered Mac.com users send and receive IMs with AIM users without having an AIM account!
Too bad I don’t use a Mac!

KeymasterWe’ve got a new intro to iChat, written by our Mac guru Rich Testani. If you use a Mac, or are curious about iChat, check it out.

It won’t be made for PC users either.
It’s one of the unique features that only come with Macs.
Believe it or not, I know people that have gotten Mac’s just for iChat.… I wan’t a mac, just for iChat! haha :p

MemberOne problem is privacy; I found myself chatting to a big group of strangers when I logged on to a site with chat capability.
It was my first time using iChat, and to my horror, when I fiddled with the settings to reset the default to show names, there was my full real name!
Is there no way to have an alternate identity for these public forums?

ParticipantWell Skylor that might not be true at all. iChat could be brought onto PC, i mean look at iTunes. iTunes is the best in the i-style programs of apple and iChat could join that of its brethren iTunes easily.

MemberConsidering that AOL handles all iChat AV traffic for Apple, you would think that the new AIM video beta would bring iChat into the mainstream by being compatible. But it doesn’t and a lot of Mac users are really disappointed.

MemberLet’s wait and see what happens in the near future. Apple is usually pretty good about the business ventures they enter and if it makes sense to have this feature in AIM, Apple will work with AOL to make it so. We just have to hang tight for a few.

MemberMy daughter just bought a emac running panther. She is away at school and called in a panic last night because her ichat disconnects when the emac monitor and hard drive go to sleep. She said her old imac never did this when put to sleep. I think she can set it so it will connect on wakeing, but is there a way to set it up to not disconnect at sleep? Thanks jackcar

MemberYou need to set up iChat to not log you off.
– Launch iChat
– Go to the iChat menu and choose Preferences.
– Under the General category check the option “Show status in menu bar”This should automatically uncheck the option “When I quit iChat, set my status to Offline” This will allow her to quit iChat and still listen for IMs in the background, it also SHOULD keep her from getting logged off when the computer sleeps. She’ll also be able to control her status and messages from the menu bar by the clock.
Hope that helps.

Memberi have been a mac user for as long as I can remember. I remember when mac os X came out and I was still usin mac os 9. one of the main reasons I wanted mac os X was for ichat, it looked really kool as long as wit the other programs. I finally got panther (mac os 10.3) and everything is really kool. ichat is awesome. it is way better than AIM, except I really wish that it was easier to switch sns then having to go to the preference thing and I really wish you could have profiles. can sum1 tell me why cant ichat have profiles that aim users can see? and does any one think they will ever add this feature? I hope so.
