MemberHi.
I recently updated my wife’s laptop (Win98) email from Earthlink to Optonline, with tech supports help.
A few days later I see that she got a email from AIM requesting verification of this change, with statement that it was really important that she confirm.
She doesn’t log on that often, and now I look at it almost 2 weeks later, and I noticed (connection?) that when was booting up it mentioned something about a SMTP problem….. (should have paid more attention to it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). Note that she has wireless so internet gets connected as part of full bootup. I also tried to respond to this note, and it failed delivery with something about a SMTP failure. I was able to send her an email from my computer, and received ok, and she to me ok.
Question is………….. is this a virus? ………. and why would AIM be asking me for address info?
Thx.

Keymasteri would assume no.. but that said I dont deal with AIM that much.. If you kept the email that you recieved you should see in the “header” the address it was send from if possible can you paste that header in here so I can look into it more for you a header looks something like this and is usually found by the properties option on the email – although some can be “created” but if its AIM mail then it might be a little difficult to trace :

MemberThat email looks legit to me..
Although, you should only have gotten that email if you actually went into AIM and clicked on change email, and typed in the new email address. Perhaps your wife did this on AIM?About the SMTP error… It doesn’t sound like it has anything to do with AIM… SMTP is the protocol to send email, so that wouldn’t affect if she could recieve email. I’m guessing it has something to do with your server settings in your email client (Outlook or otherwise). It’s possible that the error was just saying it couldn’t connect to the server at the time, and it is working now. If it happens again post the error so we can check it out for you.

Keymasterok, I did a search on the return path you have provided changenew_4_d240d682be2af2a2828f00080d39ff60967b049128113578b1820e9d0a8dc204_xxxxxx@newman.oscar.aol.com
for you and I have found out that this is a lottery scam. by clicking the link to confirm your email address you are in fact confirming that the email is valid and you will as a result get more crap in you mailbox. There are a couple of versions the one you mentioned and also a 5.2 version. If there is indeed a patch ( update) for AOL you will be able to find more info on it from the AOL messenger website .
