MemberThe people who are in charge of AIM didn’t enforce that rule where if an account hasn’t been used for ‘x’ amount of time, then the screen name would pretty much be deleted and could be re-registered by somebody else, correct?
Because there was a certain screen name that I REALLY wanted, but it’s already registered. I even tried adding numbers and other characters to it, but they’re ALL taken too! And I’ve been keeping an eye on this screen name for almost 6 months now; and the real owner has not logged in once.
What a waste.
Sorry for the rant, (and please don’t think this thread was pointless to make, because I actually had a question). Didn’t the staff propose that they’d do this for a long time now, but just haven’t actually done so?

MemberPeople always say after six months you can get them, but I know they’re wrong. I’ve watched out for quite a few screen names over the years. Now, granted I’m obviously not watching AIM 24 hours a day, but a bunch of the screen names I’ve wanted, I have not seen on even once for YEARS. Even before you could go invisible on AIM. You’d think I’d have at least seen it sign on every once and awhile. Sure, they could be blocking people that aren’t on there buddy list also, but I doubt every single one of them has been doing it. It just seems like once a screen name is registered, that’s it. The only way to get it is from the actual person that registered it.

MemberI’m pretty sure if you registered before they started that “don’t use your account, it gets deleted” thing, it will not be deleted after a certain time. I have a screenname which I don’t think I’ve used in at least a year, and I was able to sign on with it just now.

MemberTerms and conditions always apply to you in a program like AIM, even if you registered before they were issued. There is always a clause in the ones you agree to that they can be changed at any time with or without notice. So when you registered it has nothing to do with it. I have had two screennames deleted, but I also have one that was not used for more than six months and fine. I think it’s more or less they have a right to delete it, if they get around to it – not that they will.
Also, just because you can’t see someone doesn’t mean they aren’t using the sn. I believe you have always been able to set the privacy settings on AIM to only allow your friends to see you or know you are online.

MemberI too recently remember a screen name that I haven’t used. I know it has been at least two years since I last used it too, and no one else could have possibly used it. But yet, I tried to sign on to it a few days ago and it worked. You’d think it would have been long gone.

I believe you have always been able to set the privacy settings on AIM to only allow your friends to see you or know you are online. As I already stated, this is definitely a possibility. But when you’re talking about a bunch of screen names, and never seeing ANY of them online for years, I don’t think it’s just a coincidence. I’m sure some of them haven’t been in use for much longer than six months. People change screen names and stop using old ones many, many times, at least from my experiences.

MemberWell theres alot of legitimate reasons for not doing this. I know alot of people who have year-old screenames on their buddylist, so imagine if someone got your account and signed on, and then suddenly gets messaged by 5 of your old friends. Complete chaos.

But DANG it, it was such a nice name. No numbers needed. Easy to remember. I would like to personally strangle who signed up for it, then never used it, and put it to waste. Nah, just playin’.
****.
