ParticipantOkay ehm… 5-6th graders. What kind of camp is it? Any particular theme or whatnot?
Personally, when I was that age I remember reading a lot of ghost novels *laughs* I know, youd never imagine right? *snort, giggle*
A couple titles I remember reading were “Summer of my German Soldier”, but it’s quite sad. “Wait till helen comes” Which is a ghost story.
Charlottes Web, Secret Garden, Shiloh, Where the Red Fern Grows, Sarah Plain and Tall, the Poetry of Shel Silverstein is fun, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, The Outsiders, The Giver…. all books that I remember loving when I was younger.
My sister RAVED about Out of the Dust.
My Brother STILL has the whole Mariel of Redwall series, by Brian Jacques on his shelf (About the only books he has other than Maxim, being 19 years old).Though I don’t know how many are offered on tape so I thought I’d give a long list *shrug*

MemberHmmm, kids books. Let me see what I can pull out of my cousin Samantha’s closet (she’s almost 12)…
Maniac Magee
Harry Potter (if they haven’t already read it)
A Wrinkle in Time (LOVED this book as a kid!)
Goosebumps series
Babysitters Club series (although I read those in like 3rd grade)Hope that helped!
*side note: sam….push wasn’t really something i enjoyed. it was more along the lines of “this is really disgusting, but i want to see what happens to this girl.” makes you think, though*
EDIT: Oh, I almost forgot! Does anyone know the name of this book? They turned it into a non-animated Disney movie. About a girl and a boy who befriend each other, and they have some kind of hangout place in the woods. The hangout has a big tree, along with a bridge and a river. And the boy ends up dying, but somehow comes back as a ghost. And the girl ends up taking over the fort hangout.
Man, it’s gonna drive me insane! I gotta find that title now!
EDIT: Found it! I knew Alexis Bledel from “Gilmore Girls” starred in the movie. It is Tuck Everlasting!

Participant*tilts* Tuck Everlasting…wasn’t that the movie about the family of immortals and she falls in love with him, and finds out he’s immortal because his family drank from this spring in a tree or something and then she ends up dying and he sees her grave by the tree when he comes back…being…all immortal and stuff?

MemberYeah! That’s it! I thought he died though. I guess not, if his family drank from the spring to keep them immortal…Sad ending, good book though.

ParticipantThank you, both for the suggestions! 🙂 It’s a church camp, and last year I brought some *award winners* from when I was a kid . . . well, some of the things were too yucky for the girls. I was thinking, Island of the Blue Dolphin-type stuff; strong female character; survival; autonomy. But when the characters ended up gutting birds, etc., the girls lost interest. Your suggestions are exactly what I was looking for.
I’ll be taking those lists to the library – almost everything is on-tape any more.

MemberI’m about 75 pages into “Lightning” by Koontz (much better than “The Husband”, which I recently finished). Thanks for the recommendation.

ParticipantWell I highly suggest that if you ever get a chance to read “Catcher in the Rye”… don’t. I just finished it, and wish I hadn’t started it. But at least I’ve read another “classic” and can cross it off my list.

MemberI recommend How not program in C++ by Steve Oualline
I kinda got bored of novels a while ago and would much rather read how to books now 😛

Member“The 5 People You Meet in Heaven” is great. “Speak” is a good book too. It’s for a teenage audience *like me* but you still might be interested.

ParticipantA classic:
George Orwell – The Animal Farm

ParticipantOh gosh, Drain. My buddy just had me watch the 5 people you meet in heaven movie. Talk about tearing your guts out. He says the book was better (but when isn’t it, eh?) but really… oh my gosh. My mother actually cried through nearly the whole movie. Then end just stabbed me in the face and twisted the blade.
Funny about classics, Tom…I find most of them make me sick to my stomach. Point in case…Mark Twain is -garbage-. *glare*

Participant*grins* A man after my own heart, heh.
July 14, 2006 at 11:04 pm #146525princeG
ParticipantI want to read the Alchemist as I’ve been told as well that it’s very good, I’ve read though 11 minutes which I liked..
July 14, 2006 at 11:55 pm #146512RabidKitten
ParticipantAlchemist is an amazing book. Just…amazing, I thought at least. Then again, it really depends on what kind of person you are.
For example, my roomie Addy’s mother read it. She’s a CPA CIA accountant. Very republican, right wing, strict, prudeish, ocd, not spiritual in the least…and she actually openly taunts and makes fun of the book.
While on the other hand, there’s Addy and I–very open minded, very spiritual, very into thinking outside of the box and looking at new ideas and concepts, art whores and such and we just adore it. Even if you don’t swallow their concepts of the universe, it’s still SUCH a feel good book.
