Participanttake a look at this page: http://whatismyipaddress.com/staticpages/index.php/how-do-I-change-my-ip-address
although, I have to ask (with some of your previous questions considered) why do you need to? Why are you so concerned about your IP address?

Memberhey, i already saw that website prior to posting the queston here, thanks anyways. Really i guess i dont have to, but im really interested in internet security and i love learning about this stuff, not for any certain reason, guess its just an interest of mine, one of many, but yes, that site talks about unplugging for a set period of time, and i was too concerned that doin that would result in harm to my system or something, or make it hard to reconnect.
bte tigerblade did u see my other post about firewalls and all those ip’s it stops? whats the goal of all those people…i elaborate more in the post.

Participanti’m… sorry. I thought your question had been answered, hadn’t it? According to the link I’d given, supposedly you should get a new IP if you unplug your connection long enough. I see no reason why it would harm your system or make it hard to reconnect. You’d just be without a connection for however long you disconnect it.
As for the other post about firewalls and such, I don’t have time to look for it just now, but basically the only goal those people have is to mess with other people. There isn’t really a goal half the time, just to make other people’s lives more difficult.

MemberT.blade….i read on that site u gave me, there is a sentence in there that goes onto say how “it can significantly impact security” and im not exactly sure if i hafta unplug the router or anything, so based soley on that sentence alone?, i am kinda backing away from doin but yet, still have the urge to see for the heck of it, like i said, im not posting this stuff becasue im think im being tracked by someone, heck, we all may be, i commented on a post a few days back about third parties being able to watch AIM convos between buddies, may u saw it, but this stuff interests me and also, i wanna make sure i have all bases covered securitywise on my system.

Participantread the whole paragraph:
Quote:if you are using a cable/DSL modem and a router, you may wish to connect your computer directly to the cable/DSL modem. Please note that this could significantly impact your system security. This allows your ISP’s DHCP to issue you a new (hopefully changed) IP address based of the (hardware) MAC address of your computer’s ethernet card.they’re talking about a situation in which you connect directly to the modem instead of going through a router like most people do. the reason it could affect your security is that most routers (I imagine all routers) have built-in firewalls.
if you’re bypassing the router and connecting straight to the modem, then sure you might get a new IP address because it’s different hardware being recognized, but you’re also bypassing the protection of the router’s firewall. you’ll be relying solely on the firewall installed on your computer.
