MemberHey I was wondering if there is any way for my computer to keep a lsit of who all is viewing my away message while I am gone? Is there a program that does that or a trick to do it?

MemberI recently created an AIM Profile View Tracker, which tracks who views your profile. You can register for it by going to http://www.trackmyprofile.com

Memberso, if i understand correctly, i could have my AIM away message up and someone could view it 10, 000 times to read the away message andd without a link, i cant tell that, that is happening? what if in your profile a person just looks at ur info but neglects to click your tracking link, then you never knew they were there right?

Participantslickrick — correct. the AIM profile (and the away message) don’t support the kind of code needed to do any sort of tracking.
so unless they click a link, you’ll never know.

Membernow, does this matter. Ya know how AIM is downloadable without having to have AOL, well, does that matter, question being if im talking to someone on AIM but i have a different internet provider, and they have AOL, still, are they able to secretly see my clicks on their away message or not? b/c AIM is owned by aol correct, hence the name AOL Instant Messanger, im aware that having AOL as one’s main internet service allows for more capabilities then just d/L aim…..ig uess im really trying to say if it matters that an AIM subscriber chats with an AOL user as appose to AIM chatting with AIM user, can the AOL user do anything that the AIM user can’t? in so far as secret links embedded and profile counting?

Participantnope. you cannot track profile views, no matter if you’re using AIM or AOL itself.

MemberSo is it “safe” to say, that ULTIMATELY, no one can see ur online unless ur on their buddy list, regardless of them having ur IP add. and regardless of how many times u click to read their away message, well i guess they also wouldnt be able to see if you were online if u did that “hiding ur SN trick” but otherwise, no correct?
PS- is there a way for someone on ur buddy list or not on it for that matter, to obtain a list of the people on ur buddylist, besides themselves, say they’re curious whose on ur list, can they obtain it thru any means? what does the option in the menu labeled “my aim” on the top menu on the AIM box mean, it says “LOAD BUDDYLIST” is that any kind of revealing feature, or the”GET FILE” option?

Participantalright, in order:
If I’m not on your buddylist, but know your screenname, all I have to do is open up an IM window to you (just open up a standard window and type your screenname in the TO: field) and click the get info button. If you’re online, it should bring up your profile (and away message if you’re away). I don’t remember how it works if you’re invisible, but I think the same thing applies. I think the only thing invisibility does is hide you from showing up on buddylists. You’re still fully available, just not as easily as before. Your IP address is irrelevant.
No matter how many times you check their away message, they cannot track that unless you click a link within their away message or profile.
Unless you save your buddylist and send it to someone, or upload it somewhere, or upload it to a service like BuddyTree.com, no one can see who’s on your buddylist.
“Load Buddylist” is a way for you to reload a buddylist that you’ve saved on your computer. Say you keep two separate AIM accounts, and one you just haven’t used in a while so your buddylist is old — some contacts you’ve removed, you’ve added some, some have changed, whatever — so you need to update it. Instead of going through and manually updating everything, you can save the buddylist from your other screenname and load it into this one. I make sure to back up my friends list (I use Trillian, so it’s a little different for me) at least once a month if not more often.
“Get File” does just that — if you’re chatting with a friend, and they have their “allow friends to get files” (i dont recall the exact label) option set, then you can browse whatever files they’ve made available. As far as I know, almost everyone has this feature disabled, but you may want to check. Go into your preferences and look for this option (might be under privacy, but not sure on that) and make sure it’s disabled.
