KeymasterI tried to give a one word reply, and the error said you must post 10 chars or more. Can this be removed? Thanks, n3td3v

MemberA one word reply? Maybe we should reconsider the title ‘Senior Member’ below your posts. How can a one word reply possibly be of any good to our beloved forums?

To say stuff like “Cool”… or to quickly agree with someone on something thats already had a long explaination and stuff.January 1, 2005 at 8:13 pm #110451Jeff Hester

Can it be removed? Yes. Will I remove it? No.
I can configure the forums to accept one word posts, but I don’t want to. This isn’t meant to be a chat room where people drop one word responses. It’s intended to be a place where people pose thoughtful questions and get thoughtful answers.
You could argue that people might be tempted to simply fill their post with words just to get around this character requirement, but I think it’s a useful and reasonable rule and I’m willing to deal with the aberrations.
But I’m also a pretty flexible guy, and you obviously felt that there is a valid need for one word posts, so could you share why you want to be able to post one word replies? If there is a valid case for that, I might reconsider my position.
Frankly, the only case I can think of is for poll-type answers (yes/no or left/top), but this would be better addressed by actually creating a poll anyway. So I’m still fairly stumped at why a one word answer is a good and necessary thing.
Of course, you could always just use one LONG word. 😉

Participantso its 10 characters, not 10 words? hmm… its your call, but couldnt people just add a bunch of periods or whatnot?
Quote:LOL!!!!111should it be some sort of word limit, like 3 words… although i suppose they could just do LOL three times.

ParticipantIt it really that hard to type out “Yes, that’s very true, and from what’s been said so far, I agree”. In any case, it’s really a bit of a dumb idea to just go and “agree” without adding anything worthwhile or alteration wise unless a show of “agree/disagree” is asked for, in which case, that’s what polls are for, reputation and the like.

In other words, you want to add a completely useless comment to the topic. If you’re going to post, please add something useful, otherwise keep it to yourself. “Cool” is not something I would appreciate.January 2, 2005 at 4:39 am #110454Oreo

Cool is not something most people would appreciate. Usually, people who have been on this forum about a day or so either read the rules or catch on. I mean, if you want a chatroom I hear Yahoo! has some good ones.January 2, 2005 at 4:45 am #110462mynameisdougb
MemberI don’t mean to be devils advocate here or anything, but wouldn’t posting these comments that agree that posting one word comments be lowered to the same level as posting a one word comment? I mean you are all pretty much saying the same thing, but in your own words, which after the first point has been made is pretty much pointless after that to repeat what has already been said.

MemberN3td3v, Imagine BBB as a database of information. People come to get help with messengers, computers, whatever. Would a database have “Cool.” “Hey.” “Ya.” ? Not having short posts mostly provides easier navigation since topics are smaller and there is less to read through.

MemberActually, no…it’s NOT the same thing…see…we added our own feelings to it…in essence then it is not “just agreeing” it is not just saying “cool” it is expressing a complete thought and expanding upon it.

MemberIt just seems like to me that one person has proved a point, and for more people to prove that same point is an insult to the person that suggested it. I mean how many times does a person have to be told “your idea makes no sense and shouldn’t have been thought of in the first place”? I just think it should have been answered and locked, the point has been made clearly across the board.

KeymasterYes, but allowing the discussion to continue gives everyone a chance to express their own view. Just because I explained why I put a limit in place, that doesn’t mean I’m right. Someone else could make an argument in favor of no limit, or in favor of an even more stringent limit. If I simply replied and locked the topic, I’d never have a chance to hear those viewpoints and possibly change the policy.
It seems that so far, most people tend to agree that one word replies don’t have a lot of value. Personally, I look at it this way. If I were searching for an answer to a question and wanted to print the entire discussion topic for reference, I’d be pissed that a one word answer of “cool!” wasted two inches of paper on my print out.
Now then, topics such as this are not technical in nature, but philosophical. Is it a good thing to reply to a topic and essentially express agreement with everyone else? Should people only reply if they have a unique view? In my opinion, no.
I’d like to reward people who can express their opinion in a way that’s interesting, informative, or amusing. If someone takes the time to post something though-provoking or informative, I’ll boost their reputation.
Conversely, if they post something that is really just a waste of space, I might be inclined to ding their reputation. If they really got on my nerves, I might even add them to my ignore list.

MemberWell I guess you got me there haha, it just seemed like an attack, since for most people the response would be the same. But it makes sense for everyone to put there input in to the conversation. As for the question, I think it would be interesting for the character limit to be high for the newer people, and as the more you post, the lower the limit would go, because assuming you post over 200 posts that have to be a certain length, you would be able to not have to say as much. Then you would figure at that point the member would be used to explaining everything in so much detail that it would be pointless, but maybe if a member that has contributed alot to the community had a question that had to be answered, or found a question that he or she thinks should be answered but could not answer it themselves, then he our she could *bump* the post so people would notice it.
But you know, its 1 oclock in the morning right now and I have been thinking deep about things all night, so I doubt any of what I just said makes any sense, and if it does, I doubt the architexture of vBulletin could do it.
