KeymasterA recent study concluded that chat activity is slowing.
What’s your take on this? Are chat rooms being replaced by instant messaging and more selective online socialization?

Memberi think chat rooms are being replaced by instant messaging programs…i used to go into chat rooms just to chat with people but now when i go in them there is a lot of people that flood the room with stupid pointless thing just to irritate people…the only chat room i go into now is the one on this site…and with the chat rooms you never know who you could be talking with…it could be some sexual predator or another type of criminal…if they could get rid of those kind of people and the people with bots that flood the room people might would use them more often.

MemberYeah, I really think that’s annoying how all the stupid spammers flood the rooms every three seconds and you can’t even get a conversation going with someone. If the spamming stopped and like, let everyone know about it, too, then it would definately become more popular.

MemberEven chats with friends are too hard to maintain. Everything goes by so fast, you leave for 10 seconds and the stuff you were reading is long gone. And no one knows anyone else, so it ends up being very confusing.

MemberI miss MSN Chat, that was the ABSOLUTE best chat there was. It had an easy to use interface and best of all ROOM MODERATION.

ParticipantA lot of the reason I went to rooms was because of the RP that went on. Yeah ok, I’m a dork, yahoo big deal. But ever since MSN closed its doors it’s harder to find quality rp. I don’t mean it has to be total Para, Descrip. RP, but something more than speed and one liners. That and I swear if I see one more person spell “to” the numerical way or anything like that, I’m going to do something violent. It’s harder to keep the stupid people out and with so many rooms and places available, the decent people are all spread across eternity, instead of back in the day where there was basically only AOL and Yahoo and everyone was compacted into those two.

ParticipantI do agree that maybe chatrooms are being replaced by instant messaging. For one, I SELDOM get into a chatroom without anyone whispering to me and inviting me for a sex chat.. 😡 The spammers and flooders also get on my nerves sometimes.

MemberI get an error message.
Well, I can’t even reach friggin Yahoo! rooms… So I don’t have any idea on that.
But AIM, wow! Rooms are messed up now. It’s a bunch of horny people posting (fake) pictures of themselves to other people, to get Horny. People create like i don’t know how many clones, and the only chatroom without these pervs are ones with random names you and your buddies go to (ex. Ihategeorgebushchat)…
I don’t know about MSN chat either, any descriptions?
ICQ doens’t have a chat AFAIK…
IRC is pretty sweet though, but it’s kinda “primitive”… What’s this aobut slowing your IP? -
