ParticipantI am running XP Home SP2 all current updates, Athlon 64 3300+, 1GB RAM, virus/spware free. Most days I hibernate my PC instead of a full shutdown, simply because it starts up a little faster the next day. But over the last few weeks, after hibernating my computer, it turns itself back on at some point in time. I have waited to make sure it is indeed off, and still when I come back to it, it is up and running. It doesn’t seem to matter if I leave any programs running or if I close them all down. When I do a full shutdown, it doesn’t do it. It’s really just more of an annoyance than anything else, I just don’t understand it. Any ideas on why this is happening?

Memberdo you have someone who is there to turn it back on?
have you tried checking your power management properties to see if they have changed. I have never heard them changing by themselves but I guess anything is worth looking trying.
curious as to what is causing it myself. unless it is what I suggested I wouldnt have any idea unless you have a hacker that has gotten into your system.April 24, 2006 at 9:18 pm #143144amy_d_g
ParticipantThanks for the reply williamlee! No, I am the only one here, no one to turn it back on. I have looked at the power management properties but everything looks ok as far as I can see unless I am missing something. I use ZoneAlarm, as well as AVG Anitvirus, Spybot S&D, AdAware and MS Antispyware, my system turns up clean everytime, so I don’t think I have any security problems.

MemberYOUR COMPUTER IS ALIVE!!!! RUN!!!!!!
Haha, I’m jsut kidding. May I ask if this is a laptop or a desktop? Because some laptops, when you hibernate, then close the lid of your computer, then open it again, it automatically turns back on, you don’t need to hit the power button. I imagine something along this nature is happening, even if it is a desktop. I suppose because of that feature, hibernation can be very prone to be turned back on all by itself. I can’t tell you exactly what’s the matter, it could be your power settings (I like to set everything to “Never”, it’s best for performance and no computer crashes), it could be a program “poking” Windows to turn back on (say, a notification, for example). Either don’t use hibernation, or attempt to find what’s wrong.
Also, you might want to try to start up in safe mode one night, then hibernate it (I think XP allows hibernation through safe mode, if not scratch this idea), and see if it starts up the next morning.

ParticipantWell it is a desktop, and yes all my power settings are set to never. I still can’t for the life of me figure out why this started doing this all of a sudden, no hardware/software changes etc. I tried the safe mode idea, it would not allow me to hibernate (not an option). So unless anybody has any other ideas, I guess I’ll just live with it. Not a big deal anyways. 🙂
Thanks for the replies!

ParticipantCheck your system BIOS. You’ll need to hit the DEL, F1-12 or ESC key right when the computer turns on, before windows starts. Automatic-startup may be enabled (as a joke?) and thus the computer starts itself at a certain time. You could also disable Wake-On-LAN (Also in the BIOS).
This has nothing to do with Windows Power Management, Spyware/Adware or pretty much anything else you could do.
