ParticipantHello,
My contacts in the Yahoo Messenger list are always displayed as offline despite their being online.I also made sure that they haven’t changed their preferences.I am not able to chat. I uninstalled and installed thrice Y! Messenger thrice to no avail.

ParticipantHello and welcome to BBB! I’m sure this is very frustrating for you.
Can you tell me if this is something that just started happening recently? Had you upgraded Yahoo Messenger when it happened? Any other system changes?
When you say you are not able to chat….do you mean you cannot even send your contacts what appears to be an offline message? What happens if you try to send a text message to a contact?

ParticipantHi Doris,
Thank you for your reply.
I used Y!Messenger 8 for a month without any problem. When this problem cropped up I was advised by Yahoo support Team to uninstall 8 and reinstall version 9 which I did to no avail. And also no other system changes other than increasing my Virtual memory.

ParticipantI know you mentioned you’ve uninstalled and installed a couple of times. However, a regular uninstall often leaves some files/folders on your computer that may not be removed completely. I can’t say this will help for sure, but you could try a complete uninstall using RevoUninstaller which does a scan (if you choose the deepest level of uninstall) for leftovers after the regular uninstall. Then you could try a fresh install of the latest stable version.
It may also be worthwhile to run complete virus and spyware scans with up to date definitions. to be sure there is no malware blocking the proper operation of the program, if you haven’t already done so.
Finally, make sure you have the latest versions of Java and Flash installed. Although I doubt they would affect your contact list – they are necessary for proper operation of the program and it’s can’t hurt to make sure you have them.
Let me know if this helps at all.

ParticipantThank you Doris.
I was also advised By Y! messenger support team to download and install the following for better compatibility.
1. Java Run Time Environment 2. Microsoft Visual c++ 2008 Redistributable package.
I have two questions. 1. I’ve downloaded & installed Java Run Time Environment. Do I need to do anything more to it?
2. I already have MS visual C++ 2005. Do I need to Uninstall it prior to installing MS Visual C ++ 2008.Aravind.

ParticipantAs for Java, once you download and install it you should not need to do anything else.
For Microsoft Visual c++ I don’t know for sure, but in general, if you go ahead and install it, it will tell you if you need to uninstall the old version first. I suspect it will install just fine. I wouldn’t uninstall the old version unless it tells you to.
Let us know how it goes!!

ParticipantIt is not accurate to say version 9 has no bugs. There are bugs. However, it is considered stable and reliable for general release and use.
If you read the entire thread, you will see that the user HAS tried version 9 and that did not fix the problem.
I think it’s important to wait and see if aravindps posts back and lets us know if Java and/or the C++ installations have helped to resolve the problem.

MemberBull****.
Yahoo! Messenger v9.0 has actually a good amount of bugs. If you want my current list of bugs, I’ll be GLAD to post them all. To say a program has 0 bugs, is pretty bold and in my opinion, dumb, because all programs have some kind of bugs. 🙂

MemberROFL. Maybe. *whistles away* Here’s some of the current list, excluding exploits and other redundant things…
1. The size of the text input area in instant messages isn’t saved.
2. There is no way to turn off the Messenger tips (in the IM windows) in Messenger, other than a registry key from the v8.1.0.421 build.
3. My Profiles has been removed for unknown reasons (probably won’t be added back).
4. Cannot perform : chat emotes in chats anymore.
5. Taskbar flashing for new messages received in chats don’t work anymore (hasn’t worked since v7.0).
6. Horizontal scrollbar still appears in the chat room user list if you minimize and restore the window (has for a long, long time now).
7. Version key is still stuck as 0.0.0.0, which needs fixed if using something like HyperIM for LaunchCast statuses.
8. Last person on voice in chat rooms’ name still remains and flickers after keying off voice.
9. Yahoo! Messenger v9.0.0.2018 saves all cache temp files in the main program directory, and not the cache folder.November 1, 2008 at 10:06 pm #171740Jeff Hester
KeymasterI notice that for the last few months, I go to shut my computer down and every time I do, I must exit Yahoo Messenger manually before shutting down or it will not respond and the computer might stay on since Yahoo will not close automatically to allow the computer to shut down (I have to end it manually first by exiting it manually or closing it when a box pops up saying Yahoo.exe is not responding, or whatever it said). Even upgrading to 9.0 didn’t fix this. I even went as far as removing Yahoo Messenger completely and deleting most, if not all Yahoo Messenger registry entries (thus deleting all traces of Yahoo Messenger on my computer after backing up my archives and messages on a flash drive) then reinstalled 9.0 completely flesh. But still it does that. But it isn’t a big deal; just a very minor inconvenience.
