MemberHere’s a basic explanation:
when you have a webcam or voice chat with someone, there’s a direct connection between your computer and that of the other chatter. Without either your computer or that of the other being infected with some kind of spying software, it won’t be possible to get the conversation. Of course if you both have a good firewall installed, you’d know about it if something like that was installed and active because there’d be unexpected outgoing traffic that your firewall would’ve notified you about.A personal note: you’d either have to have some big enemies (or weird friends for that matter), or a lot of bad luck, or be discussing something top secret if you worry about someone trying to catch your chats.

KeymasterRoland covered it well, but there are two possible exceptions:
1. The other person person you’re sharing your webcam with could be recording the conversation.
2. There are tracking programs that can be installed on your computer or your friend’s computer that will periodically take snapshots of the screen and save them. Not a recording, per se, but it could allow someone else with physical access to the computer a way to see some of the webcam session. Usually these programs are installed by parents or suspicious spouses, but they do exist.

Memberaren’t we forgetting something? one of my personal favorites ^.^
PCAnywhere. there are only two way this could eb installed on your computer.
1. a friend comes over and installs it saying it s a game or soemthign alogn that line
2. a hacker tacs control of your computer and makes you download it(sounds imposible i know, but i know a few guys who can do it ^.^)
anyhow, PCAnywhere can be installed on a computer. after that the pc is given an access password as well as pcanywhere username. now all the other person has to do is log into pcanywhere on his/her computer and log into your pcanywhere. after that boom they have a window of your desktop on their screen. they see anythign you are doing. and they can control your computer in teh same way. but yeah if they don’t move teh mouse you will never know they are there ^.^
firewalls and virus scanners do not pic up pcanywhere cause it is legit program. it is used in many major companies to keep an eye on te progress of their workers.September 9, 2003 at 3:46 pm #55955Jeff Hester
KeymasterGood point on pcAnywhere, but I disagree with your last statement. I don’t know of ANY company that uses pcAnywhere to “keep an eye on the progress of their workers.” We use it where I work, but it’s configured to always prompt for permission to view or take control of your computer. It’s used almost exclusively for remote computer support, allowing tech guys to help someone across the country or even across the world.

You’ll be notified of the program going online by your firewall if even the slightest thing has changed, for example a firewall update. But in essence you’re right, there are programs like that. But, and I’m only speaking for myself here, I would never let anyone install anything on my computer without me checking what it is and if I really want it installed.

Memberpcanywhere has on option while installing to allwo it to go across computers without promting. my dad is the entwork admin of HP. he uses it to monitor teh progress of the workers under him on a multi tasking screen. he has configured his pcanywhere to run multiple computers at once, meaning he can log onto as many comps as he wants at one times that has pcanywhere on it. but yeah i know that a basic install of pcanywhere will ask permission beore taking control, but most people who are using PCAnywhere for teh pure purpose of spying on someone are going to custom install and put teh bypass on.

MemberSO what would be the possibility of me being spyed on then ? HOw high ? High low ?
September 12, 2003 at 2:39 pm #55968sciencefeeling
MemberI would say really low, if you are using a personal and not shared PC.
If you are sharing PC with someone, for example, your parents or wilfe…then there is a remote possibility, just look your task administrator for something suspicious, but it is a very remote possibility.
Really, just don´t worry about it..unless you have a serious enemy or a gelous partner, correction, a gelous partner that has acces to your PC.

Memberbluntly put. if your worried so much about bein caught. dun be showin nude stuff ^.^. i mean i knwo thats what your doin ^.^
noone cares what peopel see unless they are trying to keep it really private. and noone is afraid to show their face on teh net or tehy wouldn’t have a cam in teh first place.
if your goin to be showin some booty to your over seas boy or gal then take notion of buying a hand held cam. their getting cheap these days ^.^
point bein. if your afraid of bein seen. don’t be showin the flesh 😉September 13, 2003 at 11:53 am #55967sciencefeeling
MemberNow, I don´t think what he/she wants cam conversations for has anything to do with the topic. We all have our right to keep our conversations private, and it does not matter at all what we say or show in them, as long as is agreed and we are overage, so…going back to the topic…
Windows XP firewall is ok, but then you won´t probably be able to have a cam conversation through MSN. However, you can use other cam software to pass the firewall.
XP firewall should be able to block “intruders” connecting to your PC in most of the cases.

MemberI know for a fact MSN has security issues because after a thorough examination of my puter and no spyware wes found my wife is able to intercept my message from MSN and no one seems to know how she does it
September 14, 2003 at 1:23 pm #55971mikelee
MemberWell , Im jus concerned. So windows XP firewall is enuff to keep intruders out ? or do i need to install something else like a norton ?
Hypothetically , What would I need to do if I wanted to spy on someoneelse’s WebCAm conversation ?
September 14, 2003 at 4:25 pm #55961FrutZle
MemberNever install more than one firewall or anti-virus application at the same time. They can interfere with eachother and lose effectiveness. If you turn on Windows XP’s own firewall, don’t install a second one unless you really know what you’re doing.
Why would you want to spy on someone else’s webcam or chat? Besides the question why, it’s also invasion of privacy and illegal, hypothetical or not.

If no spyware was found, your wife is just probably logging your messages, meaning, in Tools>options>messages>”make sure Automatically logging message conversations is uncked”.
This is no spyware, is just keeping a record of your conversations.
That is of course if you are using MSN 6.0, if not, maybe she just installed an add-on to do it.
To read your messages on a shared computer, she does not need spyware, because the program is installed on your machine, and that information is stored and only available from your PC. If she has got a user with administrator rights, she can look at the files from whatever other computer by taking remote control of it…
Anyway, if my couple, named bf, husband or whatever I might have in the future, dares to look at my conversations (even if I am stupid enough to let them stored in my HD), then I will feel invaded in my privacy…but, hey, if you are ok with it…whatever.
