ParticipantHere’s something I was thinking about today while cycling my playlist of oldies… what are some songs you’d like to hear modern covers of?
For example, Green Day has remade “I Fought the Law” originally by Bobby Fuller, and more recently covered “Working Class Hero” by John Lennon. Both were great songs to begin with, and Green Day stepped them each up a notch. Everclear did a pretty good rendition of “Brown Eyed Girl” originally by Van Morrison.
So what songs from the golden years of rock ‘n’ roll would you like to see remade? If you have a specific artist you think would be a good candidate to cover it, list that too.
My list:
1. Bobby Day – Rockin’ Robin. Yes, I know the Jackson Five redid this one…
Candidates: The Fratellis or Jimmy Eat World.2. The Tokens – The Lion Sleeps Tonight.
Candidates: Weezer or The Killers.3. Simon and Garfunkel – The Only Living Boy In New York.
Candidate: Socialburn or Sia. Sia might be a bit harder, as she’s not a boy.4. Manfred Mann – Do Wah Diddy Diddy.
Candidate: The Strokes.5. Jim Croce – You Don’t Mess Around With Jim. (alternately Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.)
Candidates: The Kooks or Incubus.Go.

ParticipantYou know, usually, I’m not a huge fan of covers, but you are right, I do have a few that I like. The first time I heard “Working Class Hero” I took out my little pad of paper (which was actually a roll of reciept paper and a crayon I keep in the car since my notepad was in my pants and I was in a swim suit) And scribbled down lyrics so I could find it later. Only to later find out it’s been re-covered about 20 times. INCLUDING by David Bowie. (Awesome)
I’m going to have to find a list now. Bah.
Off the top of my head, I think I’d like to see a few George Thorogood songs redone…by whom, I don’t know. Simon and Garfunkle’s Red Rubber Ball (already covered by the seekers, I know) should be done again.
And I’m sorry but I just think that someone else should give a try to Boys of Summer. The Atari’s did … okay, but it’s not as completely, mm mm good rockin’ as before. They didn’t change the sound or put a spin on it at all, they just made it sound a little thinner and changed the words a bit to make it more suitable for today (dead head sticker on a cadilac– a black flag sticker)
I’m sure I’ll think of a few more.

MemberI was thinking….it might be fun if Simon and Garfunkel reunited for the 23rd time to do a cover on the Bangles’ “Hazy Shade of Winter”

MemberI was just thinking the other evening that Georgie Fame recorded some great numbers that might translate quite well into the new milleneum, particularly “Yeah yeah” and “Sitting in the park”.
