Hello all,
I’m having a bit of a problem with AIM and direct connect/file transfer. I’ve narrowed it down to Norton’s Firewall. I tried everything, every little setting to make it so AIM could connect to anything it pleased, yet it still won’t connect. When I disable the firewall, I can direct connect fine. But I don’t like leaving myself out in the open while using direct connect, plus it’s a hassle to have to disable it every time I want to use direct connect. Sugestions anyone?
If you are certain that it is a problem with Norton I would try their customer support. They should be able (and hopefully willing) to help you.
The only problem is they make you pay $29.95 for tech support
the whole point of a firewall is to protect your computer from inbound (sometimes outbound) connections. whenever you open a port on your firewall it causes a security hole that may or may not be exploited by a malicious cracker. if you want to remain fully secure i suggest that you do not open any ports. AIM direct connect is really weird and annoying. there is no tutorial that AIM/AOL puts out to guide you in opening ports for it. the only information that is available has been gathered by “cool kids”.

sometimes direct connect works, other times it doesn’t. since every version of AIM seems to have it’s own way to work direct connect… even after opening all the ports you want you still may not be able to connect.
Yeah this topic has been once posted, or a similar problem
