My apologies if this has been answered already, I did a search and couldn’t find my exact question or a definitive answer.
I have AIM 5.2.3292 and want to know if the Direct IM/Firewall/AOL Proxy Server Only option in the Edit Preferences menu is going to securely hide your IP addy if you attempt a Direct IM with someone?
My reading of this site, which talks around this issue a little bit but not directly to this specific menu setting in AIM, tends to suggest it probably isn’t totally secure. But, the language in said menu from AOL does seem to be pretty confident they’ve got my six, so I’m curious to know what the experts around here think?
Is it a secure method of hiding the IP by their proxy? A yes/no will suffice, but if anyone wants to elaborate and explain why, that would be greatly appreciated too. Cheers!
I’m no expert on AIM security, but it’s never a good idea to direct connect with someone you don’t trust. As far as third parties being able to access your ip, I don’t believe that direct connecting with someone else makes you any more or less vulnerable someone please correct me if i’m wrong.
rascat is right, dont do it with people you dont know, but i belive if you were going to do it, make sure you know the person, and there not a hacker
